In a resounding testament to the burgeoning technical prowess emerging from the island nation, a group of final-year students from the Sri Lanka Institute of InSLIITformation Technology (SLIIT) has recently secured a prestigious victory on the global stage. Team ‘Akura’, representing the Faculty of Computing, emerged as the champions of the 2026 OneEarth AI Tool Building Challenge, a high-stakes international competition organised by the School of Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London. This remarkable achievement not only underscores the individual brilliance of the students involved but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for the entire Global Sri Lankan community, demonstrating that our youth are capable of competing with, and surpassing, the brightest minds from across the globe.

The competition, which focused on the critical theme of “AI for Inclusive & Quality Education,” saw the SLIIT team navigate through rigorous preliminary rounds before successfully defending their innovative solution in front of a panel of world-renowned experts and international judges. In an era where artificial intelligence is often discussed in abstract or intimidating terms, Team Akura has managed to harness this powerful technology to address a fundamental challenge: the preservation and teaching of the Sinhala language to the next generation of young learners.

The Visionaries Behind the Victory

The success of Team Akura is the result of a collaborative effort by four exceptionally talented final-year Computing students: Mihiran Nanayakkara, Dinithi Piyathilaka, Dhuwindhu Rathnayake, and Rahul Nanayakkara. Throughout their journey, these young innovators were guided by the steady hand and academic rigour of their mentor, Dr. Dinuka Wijendra, whose commitment to excellence in the field of AI has been instrumental in shaping the project into a world-class educational tool.

The synergy within the team was evident throughout the development process, as they balanced technical complexity with a deep understanding of early childhood pedagogy. Their victory in London was not merely a win for their institution but a collective triumph for the Sri Lankan educational system, which continues to produce graduates of an exceptionally high calibre. By securing the top spot in the AI Tool Development Challenge 2026, these students have placed Sri Lanka firmly on the map as a hub for ethical and impactful AI development.

Bridging the Gap: The ‘Akura’ Innovation

The project developed by the team is a mobile, multi-modal learning platform specifically designed for children between the ages of three and six. Named ‘Akura’, the app is designed to transform the way children interact with the Sinhala language during their formative years. While the digital landscape is replete with educational apps, the members of Team Akura identified a significant gap in the market; most existing tools focus heavily on rote learning and passive consumption, failing to facilitate a deep internalization of the language’s unique phonetic and orthographic structures.

‘Akura’ distinguishes itself through the integration of several advanced AI features that provide a personalized and immersive learning experience:

  1. Handwriting Guidance: Utilizing sophisticated pattern recognition algorithms, the app provides real-time feedback as children trace Sinhala characters on the screen. This ensures that the intricate curves and strokes of the alphabet are mastered correctly from the outset.
  2. Pronunciation Assessment: Through voice recognition technology, the platform evaluates the child’s pronunciation of words and letters, offering gentle corrections and encouragement to ensure phonetic accuracy.
  3. Gesture-Based Numeracy: To make learning numbers more engaging, the app incorporates gesture-based interactions, allowing children to count and solve basic numerical puzzles through physical movement on the screen.
  4. Emotion-Aware Feedback: Perhaps the most groundbreaking feature is the app’s ability to sense a child’s emotional state through facial expression analysis. If the AI detects that a child is becoming frustrated or bored, it dynamically adjusts the difficulty level or introduces more playful elements to maintain a positive and productive learning environment.

A Global Victory for National Heritage

The significance of this achievement extends far beyond the confines of a trophy cabinet. For Sri Lankans living abroad, the challenge of maintaining cultural and linguistic ties with their homeland is an ongoing struggle. The ‘Akura’ app represents a vital bridge, offering a modern, engaging, and effective method for children growing up in Australia, the UK, Canada, and the USA to learn their mother tongue. By making the inevitable “screen time” of the modern era both productive and culturally enriching, Team Akura is helping to ensure that the beauty of the Sinhala language is preserved for generations to come.

The competition at Goldsmiths University was remarkably fierce, featuring entries from some of the most prestigious technical universities in the world. However, the Sri Lankan team’s focus on inclusivity and quality education resonated deeply with the judges. Their success serves as a powerful reminder that innovative solutions do not always require the massive budgets of Silicon Valley; rather, they require empathy, a deep understanding of the problem, and the technical skill to execute a vision.

Supporting the Next Generation of Tech Leaders

As we celebrate this milestone, it is important to recognize the role of institutions like SLIIT in fostering an environment where such talent can flourish. The university’s emphasis on practical, industry-relevant research has clearly paid dividends, empowering students like Mihiran, Dinithi, Dhuwindhu, and Rahul to take their ideas from the classroom to the world stage.

It is a story of hard work, mentorship, and the successful application of cutting-edge technology for the greater good. As they move forward into their professional careers, we have no doubt that Mihiran, Dinithi, Dhuwindhu, and Rahul will continue to innovate and lead, making the Global Sri Lankan community proud at every step.
