The international sporting arena recently witnessed a significant surge in South Asian representation as the Asia and Oceania SAMBO Championships 2026 concluded with remarkable success in the Philippine capital. Held between June 25 and June 28, 2026, the prestigious tournament transformed Manila into a vibrant epicentre of martial arts excellence, where the Sri Lankan delegation emerged as a noteworthy contender among the established powerhouses of the sport. At the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, a venue replete with historical sporting significance, 427 athletes representing 21 diverse nations gathered to compete for continental supremacy, reflecting the burgeoning global interest in this versatile combat discipline.

The participation of Sri Lanka in this championship was not merely a ceremonial gesture but rather a calculated demonstration of the nation’s growing expertise in international combat sports. As the four-day event unfolded, the Sri Lankan athletes were observed to have “pushed hard against the established leaders,” a feat that did not go unnoticed by the highest echelons of the sport’s administration. The dedication displayed by the contingent is instrumental in repositioning Sri Lanka within the regional sports hierarchy, particularly as the sport of SAMBO continues to integrate more deeply into the athletic fabric of the Asian continent.

Continental Recognition and Institutional Praise

The President of the SAMBO Union of Asia and Oceania (SUAO), Alamjon Mullaev, expressed significant satisfaction regarding the geographical diversity and the competitive parity observed throughout the tournament. In an official statement, President Mullaev highlighted that seventeen different delegations returned to their respective home countries with medals, a statistic he described as the hallmark of a “true celebration of SAMBO.” It was within this context of widespread excellence that the efforts of the Sri Lankan delegation were specifically lauded.

The Sri Lankan contingent, described as “sizeable” by championship officials, demonstrated a level of technical proficiency and competitive spirit that suggests a bright future for the sport within the island nation. Such institutional praise from the SUAO leadership is critical, as it validates the immense effort invested by local coaches, administrators, and athletes who have worked tirelessly to elevate their standards to a continental level. The praise for nations like Sri Lanka, which are still building their foothold in international SAMBO, serves as a significant catalyst for further development and investment in the sport.

A Landmark Achievement for Australia

For the members of the Global Sri Lankan community residing in Australia, the championships offered an additional reason for celebration. Jillian Hardey, a dedicated athlete from Australia, achieved a historic milestone by securing the nation’s first-ever gold medal in Women’s Combat SAMBO at the Asia and Oceania Championships. Her victory over a top-tier athlete from Kazakhstan in the final bout was described as a defining moment of the tournament.

President Mullaev remarked that while few might have anticipated such a result, the meticulous preparation of the Australian athletes was evident. This triumph is expected to provide a significant impetus for the development of SAMBO within Australia, potentially creating new opportunities for collaboration and competition between Sri Lankan and Australian athletes in the future. The success of Women’s Combat SAMBO, in particular, was highlighted as a discipline that has well and truly earned its place on the international stage, characterized by gripping bouts and outstanding technique.

Strategic Administrative Growth in Sri Lanka

The athletic achievements in Manila are mirrored by significant administrative progress within the borders of Sri Lanka. Prior to the championships, a pivotal meeting was held between the President of the SAMBO Federation Sri Lanka, Naval Commander Dinesh Jaysinghe, and H.E. Sunil Kumar Gamage, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports. This high-level dialogue was instrumental in outlining the future trajectory of the sport within the country.

During this session, Commander Jaysinghe presented the credentials of the re-structured Executive Board of the federation, providing a comprehensive briefing on the recent SAMBO activities that have been undertaken to foster local talent. A central objective of this meeting was to secure renewed and full recognition from the Ministry in 2026, with the aspiration of becoming a gazetted National Sports Federation. Such administrative legitimacy is essential for the long-term sustainability of the sport, as it facilitates access to state resources, training facilities, and organized developmental programmes.

The Technical Evolution of SAMBO

To understand the magnitude of Sri Lanka’s participation, one must appreciate the technical complexity of SAMBO, an acronym for Samozashchita Bez Oruzhiya, which translates to “self-defence without weapons.” Originating from the Soviet Union in the early 20th century, the sport is a sophisticated synthesis of various traditional folk wrestling styles, including Judo and Jujutsu. It is characterized by its emphasis on ground control, leg locks, and explosive throws.

The athletes from Sri Lanka have had to master these intricate techniques, often training under challenging conditions to compete against nations where SAMBO has been a primary sport for decades. The “Kurtka” or the traditional SAMBO jacket, along with the specific footwear used on the mat, represents a unique cultural and technical heritage that Sri Lankan athletes are now proudly adopting. The evolution from a niche interest to a competitive national pursuit is a testament to the versatility and resilience of the Sri Lankan sporting spirit.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future

As the dust settles at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, the focus for the SAMBO Federation Sri Lanka shifts toward the future. The experience gained in Manila is invaluable; the athletes have not only tested their mettle against the best in Asia and Oceania but have also forged bonds with the global sporting community. The objective now is to translate this international exposure into a robust domestic framework that can identify and nurture the next generation of champions.

The continued support of the Global Sri Lankan community is paramount in this journey. Whether through the provision of equipment, the sharing of technical expertise from those living abroad, or simply through the moral support offered via platforms like eLanka, the community remains a vital pillar of the nation’s sporting success. The journey of SAMBO in Sri Lanka is emblematic of a broader national ambition to excel on the world stage, proving that with strategic leadership and unwavering dedication, no horizon is too distant to reach.
