The National Statistics Olympiad is a highly anticipated event that allows students to showcase their knowledge in statistics and compete against talented minds from different parts of the country

* Sri Lanka has always been a country that values education. Sri Lanka’s youth are always being encouraged to excel in academic pursuits. Recently, the Institute of Applied Statistics Sri Lanka (IASSL) held the 9th National Statistics Olympiad in December last year, at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. According to a press release issued by IASSL the aim of the competition was to popularise the subject of statistics among schools and university students across the country.

The National Statistics Olympiad is a highly anticipated event that allows students to showcase their knowledge in statistics and compete against talented minds from different parts of the country.

The competition was held in two categories for competitors: Junior and Senior. The top three scorers in each category along with the merit pass holders from this national level competition then contested the 13th Statistics Olympiad – 2023 organized by the C. R. Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (AIMSCS), India which was held on the 29th of January, 2023.

In a remarkable display of talent and hard work, Ms. S. A. Sukhithi Chamali, a student from the University of Colombo, won the First Place in the Senior category of the Statistics Olympiad 2023 competition organised by AIMSCS. Ms. Chamali’s outstanding performance has made the entire nation proud and underscores the exceptional talent of Sri Lankan students.

Furthermore, it is also noteworthy to mention that Sri Lankan students dominated the Statistics Olympiad competition organised by AIMSCS. Ten of our senior category competitors were placed among the top twenty places while two places in the Junior category, including the 5th place were won by our Sri Lankan students. The 5th place in the Junior category was won by Mr. M. A.Vikum Dulara Fernando from Lyceum International School – Panadura. This impressive feat highlights the remarkable talent among Sri Lanka’s youth in the field of statistics.

The National Statistics Olympiad is one of the main events organised by the IASSL to engage with the community and promote the use of statistics and at the same time improve the statistics knowledge and skills among students across the country. With its long history, the Statistics Olympiad competition has become a highly appreciated event among schools and parents alike. The IASSL has been recognized by the Indian Institute as an exam centre for their prestigious Statistics Olympiad examination, which further enhanced the reputation of the IASSL and the Sri Lankan statistics community as a whole. To add value to the event the IASSL has collaborated with Sri Lankan state universities in organizing the event, allowing them to tap into the expertise of statisticians in academia.

The achievements of the National Statistics Olympiad winners are a testament to the exceptional talent and hard work of Sri Lanka’s youth. These young minds are the future of the country, and we are confident that they will continue to make us proud with their academic achievements.
