Arachchikattuwa is a Divisional Secretariat in Sri Lanka’s Puttalam District, located in the North Western Province, and covers about 157 square kilometers. The main livelihoods in the area are farming and animal husbandry, and it is one of the administrative divisions within Sri Lanka.
The story behind the name Arachchikattuwa goes back to the period of British administration. At that time, the area was not as populated as it is today. The villagers lived simple, peaceful lives, continuing their religious practices and cultivation work without getting involved in protests or showing support to the British.
In this calm environment, a certain man from the village decided to support the British for his personal gain. He secretly met the British administrators of the area and pledged his loyalty. The British welcomed him eagerly, seeing it as a good opportunity to gain influence in the region. Over time, he introduced his whole family to the British officers.
The British offered him the title of Arachchi (village headman). Eventually, they gave the same title to all the males in his family. This angered the peace-loving villagers, who began insulting the family. They mockingly called them “Arachchichi Katuwa”, a term implying betrayal. Over time, the name evolved into Arachchikattuwa, which became the recognized name of the place.
This story is shared by Dr. Nimal Sedera, a journalist, poet, motivational speaker, and author of more than 70 books.
