The Silence of the World Genocide in Gaza: Inaction by World Leaders – By Dr Harold Gunatillake

Dr Harold Gunatillake

A Call for Collective Responsibility and Strategic Intervention The aggression has transformed Gaza into a landscape of desolation, where nearly half of the casualties are children, and thousands remain displaced. The group of experts cited over 52,535 deaths, of which 70 per cent
continue to be women and children, and 118,491 injuries as of 4 May 2025.

Israel has killed hundreds of Palestinians, many daily peaks on 18 March 2025 with 600 casualties in 24 hours, 400 of whom were children.”

Hello viewers,

Today, I will explore a topic that my conscience compels me to address. I will undoubtedly receive substantial criticism from specific sectors, a reality that I must acknowledge and accept.

Genocide constitutes one of the most egregious violations of human rights, and the resultant suffering is incomprehensible, especially in a society that prides itself on being civilised, religious, and equitable.
The annihilation of established families inhabiting their land, whether through display or execution, precipitates a humanitarian crisis.

“In the heart of Gaza, a humanitarian catastrophe unfolds. Entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble, families torn apart, and a population left to fend for survival under relentless bombardment. The world watches, yet action remains elusive.”
“Legal experts and human rights organisations have labelled Israel’s actions as genocide. The International Court of Justice is examining the case, yet the killings persist. The deliberate targeting of civilians, the blockade of essential aid, and the destruction of infrastructure paint a grim picture—one that meets the criteria of genocide under international law.”
The persistent tensions and humanitarian crises in Gaza underscore the imperative for global leaders to implement vigilant and proactive measures aimed at preventing such atrocities. What action should the world leaders take in such a situation?
World leaders have a crucial opportunity to prioritise diplomatic engagement and encourage open dialogue among all parties involved in the Gaza conflict.

Multilateral platforms, such as the United Nations, the European Union, and the Arab League, can play a vital role in addressing grievances, negotiating ceasefires, and outlining peace plans. It’s crucial to make sure that all voices, especially from marginalised groups, are welcomed and included in these conversations.
“Despite mounting evidence, world leaders hesitate. The UK, France, and Canada have condemned the violence, yet their actions remain symbolic. The United States, Israel’s closest ally, has rejected calls for accountability. The European Union acknowledges the crisis but struggles to enforce meaningful sanctions.”

Netanyahu’s Defiance

“I will continue to lead the country, according to the letter of the law,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains defiant. He dismisses international criticism, accuses Western leaders of siding with Hamas, and continues the offensive. Even as the International Criminal Court issues an arrest warrant, Netanyahu’s grip on power remains firm.”

The Collapse of Global Morality “From Stockholm to Nouakchott, protests erupt demanding an end to the genocide. Yet, the global response remains fractured.

The world stands at a moral crossroads—will leaders act, or will history remember their silence?”

The people of Gaza do not need words. They need action. The world must decide—will it uphold justice, or will it allow history to repeat its darkest chapters?”

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with key statistics highlighting the severity of the situation:

– Displacement: Over 428,000 people have been displaced again since the escalation of hostilities on March 18, 2025, with no safe place to go.
– Food Shortages: The Famine Review Committee warns that famine thresholds may have already been crossed in northern Gaza, urging immediate action. Nearly 3,700 children were newly admitted for treatment for acute malnutrition in March 2025, compared to 2,000 in February.
– Water Crisis: Over 75% of households in Gaza report a decline in water access over the past month, leading to deteriorating sanitation conditions.
– Health System Collapse: Gaza’s medical rehabilitation system is overwhelmed, with severe shortages of specialists, supplies, and equipment, leaving vulnerable groups without essential care.
– Humanitarian Blockade: No humanitarian aid has entered Gaza for over nine weeks, as Israeli authorities imposed a full blockade on March 2, 2025. This is three times longer than the siege imposed in October 2023
– Civilian Casualties: Hundreds of civilians have been killed and injured since the collapse of the ceasefire on March 17, 2025, with intensified bombardment from air, land, and sea.
These figures underscore the urgent need for international intervention to prevent further suffering.

Enforce International Law

The enforcement of international law is fundamental. Governments and organisations must ensure that violations of human rights, including acts leading to genocide, are subject to global accountability.

International Criminal Court (ICC) proceedings should be leveraged to hold perpetrators accountable, deterring future atrocities.United States support for Israel in the Gaza war After the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7 and the ensuing outbreak of conflict in Gaza, the United States has extended extensive military, diplomatic, and financial assistance to Israel throughout the Gaza war. This support encompassed the swift deployment of naval vessels and military aircraft, substantial military aid amounting to billions of dollars, and expedited shipments of weaponry, including guided missiles, artillery shells, and advanced defence systems.

The United States consistently exercised its veto power against multiple United Nations ceasefire resolutions. It provided a protective barrier for Israel against international legal scrutiny, notwithstanding the increasing civilian casualties in Gaza and the deterioration of humanitarian conditions.

Mobilise Global Solidarity

Preventing genocide requires the collective will of nations, organisations, and individuals. World leaders must unite in condemning hate-driven ideologies and violence in Gaza. Hosting global awareness campaigns, convening emergency summits, and rallying resources show solidarity with vulnerable populations.

Conclusion

Preventing genocide in Gaza transcends ethical responsibility; it constitutes a necessity for the preservation of humanity’s collective dignity. Global leaders must engage in decisive and collaborative actions, informed by compassion, justice, and adherence to the principles of human rights. Through the implementation of comprehensive strategies and steadfast commitment, the international community can guarantee that the spectre of genocide is eradicated, not solely from Gaza but from every part of the globe.

I hope I have enlightened you on the situation of genocide in Gaza.“This is one of the most ostentatious and merciless manifestations of the desecration of human life and dignity.”
Until we meet again, Pray for Gaza, goodbye for now.
