VALE Louis Benedict (77)
GOODBYE DEAR LOUIS BENEDICT … THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES
Just heard the sad news that veteran journalist Louis Benedict (77) passed away in Sri Lanka. Louis was a mentor to many budding scribes. I had the privilege of working with this legend at the Sun/Weekend Group in the mid-1980s.
When the great Rex de Silva was Editor-in-Chief, Louis was one of the top four Deputy Editors at the Independent Group of Newspapers. The others being Iqbal Atlas, Sinha Ratnatunga and Kenneth Amarasekera. He later moved over to the Sunday Times/Daily Mirror when the Sun/Weekend closed shop.
Louis was the complete journalist. He was an excellent headline man, he could re-write a story in minutes, had an excellent command of the English language and his editorials drew rave reviews.
Most important, Louis had a heart of gold. He was also President of the People’s Movement for the Rights of Patients (PMRP).
My deepest sympathies go out to his wife Marie and the rest of his family.
