News Item in The ISLAND, 7 July 2023

Sri Lanka will play three Test matches in England next summer as part of the World Test Championship. This will be Sri Lanka’s first three match series in six years. England were the last team to engage in a three match series against Sri Lanka in 2018.

Usually, Sri Lankan teams get early part of the summer with the second half reserved for teams that are better crowd pullers. However, the trend has changed and this time West Indies will play their three Tests in early summer.

There are two games scheduled for London with the team returning to The Oval for the first time in 26 years. After they won their maiden Test match in England at the south London ground in 1998, Sri Lanka had never got a Test match at The Oval as the venue favours spin bowlers. Muttiah Muralitharan walked away with 16 wickets in 1998 as Sri Lanka won by ten wickets.

The series starts off with the first Test at Old Trafford followed by the second game at Lord’s.
