Sri Lanka finds itself at a pivotal juncture. The country faces the urgent need to recover from the Ditwah disaster and the significant challenge of reversing 20 years of stagnation in productivity. At this critical moment, effective leadership characterised by wisdom, experience, and unity is essential.
The World Bank’s Four-Pillar Reform Plan
The World Bank has delineated a comprehensive economic reform strategy comprising a four-pillar plan to transition Sri Lanka from fragile stabilisation to sustainable, investment-driven growth. This strategic framework is explicit; however, its successful realisation depends on the nation’s capacity to implement second-generation reforms with diligence and perceptiveness. As Mr Gevorg Sargsyan, the World Bank Country Manager for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, stated, the trajectory of Sri Lanka’s future development depends on decisions made at this juncture.
President Aruna Dissanayake’s Call for Unity
President Aruna Dissanayake has appropriately emphasised the importance of unity beyond political differences. In the context of disasters and economic vulnerability, protecting the populace requires cooperation that transcends partisan boundaries. The steadfast guidance of experienced leadership must complement this ethos of unity.
The Case for Ranil Wickremasinghe in Parliament
At this pivotal moment, Sri Lanka must not neglect the significance of experience. Ranil Wickremasinghe’s extensive decades of political and economic leadership uniquely qualify him to steer the nation through challenging circumstances. His participation in Parliament would not only reinforce governance but also facilitate the implementation of reforms with pragmatism and foresight.
This is not a matter of party politics; it is a matter of national survival and future prosperity. Experienced politicians are essential to restoring stability, rebuilding trust, and laying the foundation for sustainable development.
A Path Toward a Bright Future
President Aruna should invite Mr Ranil Wickremasinghe to participate in Parliament. By integrating President Aruna’s aspiration for unity with Mr Wickremasinghe’s extensive experience, Sri Lanka can forge a pathway towards resilience, growth, and optimism. Collectively, they can guide the nation toward a more promising future—one in which economic reform transcends mere plan and becomes a tangible reality for all citizens.
Tri-Force in Action
Prioritising national security and humanitarian aid, Tri-Force personnel are on a 24-hour alert to respond to all emergencies and have already implemented disaster relief measures in nearly every district.
Sri Lankan Business Community
The Sri Lankan business community is also emerging as a key force in the recovery from Cyclone Ditwah, with other corporate contributions and taking swift infrastructure measures to help restore economic recovery.
Over the past few days, more than Rs. 300 million have been donated in 19,000-plus transactions, according to Treasury Secretary Dr Harshana Suriyapperuma. “The generosity of our corporations and citizens has been remarkable. These contributions are not just funds; they are a lifeline enabling us to act decisively and rebuild swiftly,” he said.
Global Humanitarian Support
Nations and international organisations have articulated their support and have mobilised emergency relief efforts as recovery operations become more intensive.
India has historically been instrumental in prompt emergency response efforts. Prime Minister Modi conveyed heartfelt condolences to President Anura Dissanayake and reiterated India’s unwavering support for Sri Lanka, committing to continued aid via Operation Sagar Bandhu. Several Indian naval and aerial units have already sent emergency supplies, with further deployments currently underway.
The United States has provided 20,000 polysacks to strengthen embankments, along with generators, tents, water, bins, and other supplies.
Australia pledged AUD 1 million for immediate response and early recovery efforts. Nepal donated USD 200,000. Pakistan delivered substantial relief items through Pakistan Navy ships. Japan has provided emergency relief goods including tents and blankets.
The Red Cross Society of China allocated USD $100,000 in emergency financial assistance to the Sri Lanka Red Cross to support relief efforts amid the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. This contribution complements additional aid, including a USD $1 million donation from the Chinese government and a separate Rs 10 million donation from Chinese organisations operating in Sri Lanka.
UNICEF has deployed assistance to provide portable water supplies to 25 relief centres in Badulla.
The Maldives contributed USD 50,000 and 25,000 cases of canned tuna, while Sri Lankan expatriates residing in the Maldives mobilised USD 33,000 in supplementary support.
We are receiving support from numerous allied nations, and the Government of Sri Lanka has conveyed its sincere appreciation to all foreign governments.
Party Politics
Anura Dissanayake has called on all political parties to set aside political differences and unite in efforts to prevent further disaster to our nation. Meanwhile, Namal advocates that the government prioritise delivering relief to the affected populace and restoring religious sites. The public would likely show greater appreciation if Namal were to join the government, thereby providing support and cooperating to alleviate the current situation in the country.
