A major festival in Sri Lanka ” Vesak “ – By Malsha – eLanka

vesak | elanka

Vesak is a Buddhist festival that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha. It is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Vesakha (usually in May) in many countries around the world, including in South and Southeast Asia.

The festival is typically observed by practicing Buddhists through acts of merit, such as making offerings at temples, performing acts of charity, and observing the eight precepts. In some countries, the festival is celebrated with parades, processions, and other public events.

Vesak is an important holiday in Buddhism, as it marks significant milestones in the life of the Buddha and serves as a reminder of his teachings and their relevance to modern times. It is also a time for Buddhists to reflect on their own spiritual practice and to recommit to living a life of compassion, wisdom, and mindfulness.

Vesak is a major festival in Sri Lanka and is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm. Here are some ways in which Vesak is celebrated in Sri Lanka:

  1. Illuminations: Sri Lankans decorate their homes, streets, and public places with colorful lights and lanterns, known as Vesak lanterns or Vesak koodu. These lanterns are often made from bamboo frames covered with colorful paper or cloth, and are lit up with candles or electric lights.
  2. Dansalas: Dansalas are free food stalls set up by Buddhist devotees along the roadsides, where people can partake in free food and drinks. This is done as an act of generosity and as a way to spread goodwill during the festival.
  3. Religious Observances: Sri Lankans visit Buddhist temples to offer flowers, light lamps and incense, and listen to sermons by Buddhist monks. They also observe the eight precepts, which include abstaining from eating after noon, refraining from sensual pleasures, and practicing mindfulness.
  4. Vesak Day Processions: On Vesak day, processions are held in many towns and cities, with people carrying statues of the Buddha and other important Buddhist figures, along with colorful banners and flags.
  5. Meditation: Vesak is also a time for deep reflection and introspection. Many Sri Lankans spend time meditating, reflecting on the teachings of the Buddha, and striving to cultivate inner peace and wisdom.

These are some of the ways in which Vesak is celebrated in Sri Lanka, but the festival is also a time for individual reflection, generosity, and acts of kindness towards others.
