A New Era for Sri Lankan Seafaring Talent as Centrum Marine Facilitates High Value ALAM Scholarships

Centrum Marine Consultancy (Pvt) Ltd., a leader in Marine HR solutions in Sri Lanka, proudly announced a major milestone in the country’s maritime education landscape as five Sri Lankan students have secured the prestigious fully funded scholarship from Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM), Southeast Asia’s leading maritime academy operated under the MISC Group a global leader in energy-related (oil & gas) maritime solutions with Its main shareholder being Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas). This achievement reflects a breakthrough collaboration between Sri Lanka and Malaysia and marks an important step in strengthening the future of Sri Lankan youth aspiring to join the global maritime workforce.

The accomplishment follows Centrum Marine’s appointment as the official student recruitment partner for ALAM in Sri Lanka, positioning the company at the forefront of facilitating international opportunities for aspiring seafarers. This partnership strengthens maritime education ties between Sri Lanka and Malaysia and opens doors for Sri Lankan students to access world class maritime training, advanced learning environments and internationally recognized career pathways. Each scholarship is valued at RM 157,500 which is approximately equivalent to LKR 56 million in total and represents one of the most generous international maritime education sponsorships available to Sri Lankan students. The fully funded support includes tuition, accommodation, meals, learning facilities and a structured route toward global career placement.

The students who earned these scholarships underwent a rigorous multi stage selection process that assessed academic merit, aptitude, discipline, physical fitness and overall suitability for a maritime career. After succeeding in online exams and interviews conducted directly by ALAM, five Sri Lankan students were selected for the Diploma in Marine Engineering programme. They have now begun their academic journey at ALAM’s modern campus in Melaka where they will receive world class training supported by advanced simulators, well equipped resource centres and respected academic teams. Upon completion of their studies, they will follow a one year onboard training phase on vessels managed by the MISC Group, a global leader in maritime solutions. This pathway will allow them to begin their professional careers as Engine Cadets with a clear progression route to becoming Class III Marine Engineers and eventually rising toward senior engineering positions onboard international vessels.

Five deserving young men from Sri Lanka secured the fully funded sponsorship to pursue the Diploma in Marine Engineering. The scholars are Kumarasinghe Mudiyanselage Anuhas Buddhika from Hambantota, Mohomad Lahir Mohomad Safras from Gampaha, Rathnayake Mudiyanselage Sanjana Kavishan Rathnayake from Nuwara Eliya, Pathirannehelage Don Sahan Lahiru Deshapriya Pathirana from Gampaha and Withanage Induwara Dineth from Gampaha

Commenting on this achievement, Kalinga De Silva, Managing Director of Centrum Marine Consultancy, stated, “This is a proud moment for Sri Lanka and a significant step in empowering our young talent with global opportunities. We expect to recruit thirty more students in the coming thirty-six months. Facilitating these scholarships reflects our commitment to uplifting Sri Lankan youth by connecting them with world class maritime education and internationally competitive career paths. Our collaboration with ALAM and the MISC Group strengthens Sri Lanka’s presence in the global maritime industry and marks the beginning of a long-term effort to create more opportunities for the next generation of seafarers.”

Centrum Marine Consultancy (Pvt) Ltd. is focused on delivering world class recruitment, placement and training services for seafarers on behalf of global shipowners and managers. With a strong ethos of People, Passion and Professionalism, the company manages all facets of the seagoing workforce, supports cadetship and development programmes and leverages its lean operational model to offer cost efficient, timely services. Centrum Marine is committed to raising Sri Lanka’s profile in the global seafaring talent pool, enabling young Sri Lankans to access international career pathways and partnering with leading maritime institutions and employers to ensure sustainable growth and diversity in the sector.
