Asiff Hussein’s latest book ‘A Ceylon Moor Pictorial With a Glimpse into the Moorish Life of Old’ tells the story of how the Moor community evolved over the years from humble origins as mariners, merchants, mercenaries and medicine men to become the thriving community they are today.

This profusely illustrated coffee table book running to nearly 200 pages contains over 300 rare and monochrome photographs as well as more recent colour photographs capturing the rich cultural traditions of the Moor community of Sri Lanka. Old sketches and paintings depicting traditional Moor culture and society as it existed back then are included.

Besides the community’s origins, the book also covers the Arabu-Tamil script they used, main landmarks of life, traditional headdresses, jewellery, cuisine, medical remedies, proverbs, heritage mosques and saints and shrines.

A tribute to the little known culture of Sri Lanka’s Moor community, the book priced at Rs.7500, thanks to the kind sponsorship of the Hashim family, is available at Barefoot Bookshop, Vijitha Yapa (Kollupitiya branch) and the Centre for Islamic Studies Bookshop, Rohini Road, Wellawatte.
