ACBT 91st Mahagastota Festival Of Speed 2025 – A Timeless Test of Speed and Skill

The Ceylon Motor Sports Club is proud to announce the return of Sri Lanka’s most historic motorsport event—the ACBT 91st Mahagastota Festival Of Speed 2025—set to take place on April 5th and 6th, 2025, in the picturesque hills of Nuwara Eliya. Established in 1934, the Mahagastota Hill Climb holds the distinction of being Sri Lanka’s oldest motorsport event, drawing generations of racing enthusiasts and competitors eager to take on its demanding uphill course. This year’s edition promises another exhilarating showcase of skill, precision, and high-octane competition as riders and drivers push their machines to the limit on the legendary track.

The Mahagastota Hill Climb has long been a proving ground for Sri Lanka’s finest racing talent. The course, with its steep inclines, tight corners, and ever-changing mountain weather, offers a unique challenge that separates the best from the rest. Over the years, the event has witnessed record-breaking runs, legendary rivalries, and the rise of motorsport greats.

The ACBT 91st Mahagastota Festival Of Speed 2025 will feature motorcycles taking to the track on April 5th, while modern racing cars will battle for the fastest time on April 6th. With classes spanning from grassroots to high-performance machines, competitors will vie for supremacy, ensuring edge-of-the-seat action for fans and participants alike.

Adding to the spectacle, the 2025 Mahagastota Historic Parade will take place on Saturday, April 5th, featuring 55 classic cars gathering at The Grand Hotel, Nuwara Eliya, before a parade to the track. Some of Sri Lanka’s rarest and most exquisite historic vehicles will be on display, offering motorsport fans and classic car enthusiasts a glimpse into the golden era of motoring before these machines take on the legendary hill climb.

The Mahagastota Hill Climb is more than just a race—it is a celebration of Sri Lanka’s rich motorsport heritage. Fans and enthusiasts can expect a weekend filled with roaring engines, breathtaking speeds, and an atmosphere charged with passion for motorsport. As always, the CMSC remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, organization, and competitive fairness.

This year’s event is made possible by the unwavering support of partners such as SpeedBay, David Pieris, Blackpool, Pedro, BAIC, The Grand Hotel, Mobil, Meguiar’s, 3M, Barista, and Akbar Tea, who continue to fuel the growth of motorsport in Sri Lanka. Their contributions help elevate the Mahagastota Festival of Speed, ensuring a world-class experience for competitors and spectators alike.

The Australian College of Business and Technology (ACBT), Sri Lanka’s pioneer in Australian higher education since 1998, returns as the title sponsor of this prestigious event. In partnership with the globally renowned Navitas Group, ACBT provides pathways to undergraduate degrees from Edith Cowan University (Australia) and Middlesex University (UK), allowing students to obtain internationally recognized qualifications without leaving Sri Lanka. ACBT’s continued commitment to motorsports extends beyond sponsorship, as it actively supports Sri Lanka’s grassroots racing scene and emerging motorsport talent.

“CITY OF GEMS” RATNAPURA Ratnapura, known as the “City of Gems” in Sri Lanka, derives its name from the Sanskrit words “ratna” (gemstone) and “pura” (town or city). As the hub of Sri Lanka’s gem mining industry. The name is derived from Sanskrit and Pali, languages that heavily influenced the region over 2000 years ago. The city earned this name because it has been the traditional center of Sri Lanka’s gem trade for over 2,000 years. It is the primary source of world-renowned precious stones, including blue sapphires, rubies, and cat’s eyes. Some historical accounts suggest a different origin linked to the Portuguese colonial era. There is a view that the name could be derived from the Portuguese word “Rapadura,” which refers to jaggery. Ratnapura is the heart of Sri Lanka’s gem industry, often called the “gem capital of the world” due to its incredible geological wealth and ancient trading history. The region is famous for producing over 40 of the 85 known gemstone varieties in the world. The most famous is the “Ceylon Sapphire,” prized for its vivid cornflower and royal blue hues. Other varieties include yellow, pink, and the rare orange-pink Padparadscha. Specialty Stones: Includes the rare Alexandrite (which changes color in different light), Cat’s Eye Chrysoberyl, Spinel, Tourmaline, Garnet, and Moonstone. The sapphire in Princess Diana’s Iconic engagement ring is a Ceylon sapphire from the Ratnapura area. Many world-renowned gems were unearthed in the Ratnapura district. One of the largest faceted blue sapphires ever found in Ratnapura, Blue Giant of the Orient is over 465 carats. The city features remains of a Portuguese-Dutch Fort, which now houses the National Gem and Jewellery Authority. Ratnapura is the starting point for the “classic” hard route (Gilimale route) to the sacred Sripada. Ratnapura district is home to a significant number of spectacular waterfalls, often described as having the highest concentration of waterfalls in Sri Lanka. – By Francis Paul Welangoda
