Bangladesh Tour of Sri Lanka 2025 – Sri Lanka wins Test and ODI Series while comeback win for Bangladesh in T20I Series 2-1 – By Upali Obeyesekere
The Bangladesh cricket team launched their tour to Sri Lanka in June and July 2025 to play the Sri Lanka cricket team. The tour entailed two Test, three One Day International (ODI) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) matches. The Test series formed part of the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship. The Tests were both teams’ first fixtures in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle and played in Galle and the SSC (Colombo). Two of the ODIs were played at R. Premadasa Stadium (Khettarama) in Colombo, and one at Pallekele, before the T20I series moves to Pallekele and then to Dambulla before coming back to RPS Khettarama for the final match of the tour. Dhananjaya de Silva (Test), and Charith Asalanka (ODI and T20I) led the home team while Najmul Hossain Shanto (Test), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (ODI), and Litton Das (T20I) captained the Bangladesh team across the three formats.

Dhananjaya De Silva (Sri Lanka) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (Bangladesh) led the two teams in the tour opener in the First Test at Galle. On a perfect batting wicket, both teams accounted for four centuries. Mushfiqur Rahim, 163, Najmul Hossain Shanto 148 and 125 not out, Pathum Nissanka 187 were the batters who made it happen. A high scoring drawn game that was unfortunately marred by rain. Bangladesh missed out on a rare victory away from home when its series-opening cricket test against Sri Lanka ended in a draw on the rain-affected final day. After a prolonged rain break that saw the morning session curtailed to just 80 minutes, there was a window — 50 overs — still wide enough to force the issue. The visitors led by 251 runs. The stage was set. But they opted for the conservative route. Najmul Hossain Shanto pressed on to complete his second century of the match — a personal milestone for the captain, but a potentially costly one for the team. By the time the declaration came at 285-6, Bangladesh had consumed nearly an hour more of precious time — and momentum.
Shanto’s feat was historic. Only 14 other men in the long annals of test cricket have scored hundreds in each innings on two separate occasions. Shanto previously achieved the double-ton trick against Afghanistan in 2023. Bangladesh, chasing only its second test win over Sri Lanka in 27 attempts, may rue this as the one that got away. The hosts had their backs to the wall for just over a session and while they lost wickets and had to negotiate some sharp turn and bounce, they were never truly cornered. Off-spinner Nayeem Hasan removed first-innings centurion Pathum Nissanka with a peach that dipped and turned. Taijul Islam chimed in with a tidy burst, accounting for Lahiru Udara, Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal.
Brief Scores: Bangladesh 495 (Mushfiqur Rahim 163, Najmul Hossain Shanto 148, Litton Das 90, Asitha Fernando 4-86, M Rathnayake 3-36, T. Rathnayake 3-196) and 285 for 6 decl. (Najmul Hossain Shanto 125*, Shadman 76, T. Rathnayake 3-102 drew with Sri Lanka 485 (Pathum Nissanka 187, Kamindu Mendis 87, Nayeem Hassan 5-121, Mahmud 3-74) and 72 for 4 (Nissanka 24, Taijul Islam 3-23). Player of the Match: Najmul Hossain Shanto (Bangladesh).
Farewell for Angelo Mathews
The day also marked a poignant farewell. Angelo Mathews bowed out of the test arena. He fell for 8, caught off bat-pad, and each Bangladeshi fielder made a beeline to salute a fine career. A man for all seasons, Mathews had captained Sri Lanka to its first series win in England — in 2014 — and he wore the whites 119 times for his country.
“It’s sad to walk away but the love I have received from everyone is amazing. The best memory for me is winning the test series in England. Then of course we beat Australia 3-0 in 2016. Not often you whitewash the Aussies in a test series,” Mathews added. “Thankful for everyone who have been with me.”
Captain Dhananjaya de Silva paid tribute to Mathews as “a superb player and a leader.”
“He has won us so many games and those shoes are big shoes to fill,” he said. “We wish him well. He will be missed.”
Sri Lanka wins 2nd Test and Series 1-0
Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by an innings and 78 runs
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 458 (Pathum Nissanka 158, Dinesh Chandimal 93, Kusal Mendis 84, Taijul Islam 5-131) beat Bangladesh 247 (Shadman Islam 46, Sonal Dinusha 3-22, Asitha Fernando 3-51) and 133 (Mushfiqur Rahim 26, Prabath Jayasuriya 5-56) by an innings and 78 runs. Player of the Match and Player of the Series: Pathum Nissanka (Sri Lanka).
Bangladesh batting first were restricted to 247 runs due to tight bowling by Sri Lanka. In return, Sri Lanka piled up 458 runs with in-form opener Pathum Nissanka, 158, once again batting brilliantly with help from No.3 batsman Dinesh Chandimal 93, and Kusal Mendis 84. Chandimal was unfortunate to be out 7 runs short of a well-deserved century. Taijul Islam was pick of the Bangladesh bowlers with 5-13. Facing a deficit of 211 runs, Bangladesh folded to 133 runs in their second innings due mainly to a sustained bowling spell by spinner Prabath Jayasuriya.
Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya took his 12th five-wicket haul in test cricket to lead Sri Lanka to a dominating win over Bangladesh by an innings and 78 runs in the second cricket test and a 1-0 victory in the two-match series. The fourth day started with Bangladesh struggling on 115 for six needing 97 more runs to make Sri Lanka bat again. But the rest of the match lasted less than 30 minutes as Jayasuriya polished off the tail by taking three of the last four wickets at the Singhalese Sports Club. Bangladesh was all out for 133 in its second innings having made 247 in the first. Sri Lanka scored 458 in its first innings dominated by a brilliant century from opener Pathum Nissanka and backed up by half-centuries from Dinesh Chandimal (93) and Kusal Mendis (84).
Sri Lanka wins ODI Series 2-1
Kusal Mendis smashed his sixth ODI hundred and led Sri Lanka to a commanding 99-run victory in the third and final one-day international as the home team clinched the series 2-1. Mendis marshaled Sri Lanka to 285-7 with an aggressive 124 off 114 balls after captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bat. The Bangladeshi batters struggled against the pace of Dushmantha Chameera and Asitha Fernando, who shared six wickets between them to bowl out the visitors for 186 and give Sri Lanka an eighth successive win in a home ODI series. Fernando clean bowled Tanzid Hasan (17) with a searing yorker in the third over of the chase and Najmul Hossain Shanto then deflected Chameera’s incoming delivery back onto the top of the stumps for nought as the visitors slipped to 2-20. Bangladesh middle-order struggled against the spin as Dunith Wellalage (2-33) and Wanindu Hasaranga (2-35) struck with regular intervals and the Bangladeshi batters also couldn’t put up strong partnerships.
Towhid Hridoy (51) made a fighting half century off 78 balls before Chameera returned and knocked back the stumps with another superb inswinger and Fernando varied his pace to perfection for two wickets of the tailenders to wrap up the game. Mendis was strong on the leg side and smashed 18 fours in his chanceless century as he punished anything pitched short with his short-arm jab pull shots while sweeping the spinners to perfection.
1st ODI: Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 77 runs at R. Premadasa Stadium
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 244 (Charith Asalanka 106, Kusal Mendis 45, Taskin Ahmed 3-46) beat Bangladesh 167 (Tanzid 62, Jaker 51, Wanindu Hasaranga 4-10, Kamindu Mendis 3-19) by 77 runs. Player of the Match: Charith Asalanka (Sri Lanka).
Sri Lanka made 244 in 49.2 overs, helped by a quickfire century by ODI Skipper Charith Asalanka, with Kusal Mendis, 45, contributing to the score. Taskin Ahmed bowled best for the visitors taking 3-46. In return Bangladesh started off well but folded for 167 runs giving Sri Lanka a comfortable win by 77 runs. Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto got Bangladesh to a fine start, adding 71 runs for the second wicket. Both were batting fluently, until, disaster struck. In a matter of 15 minutes, Bangladesh batting collapsed slipping from 100 for 1 in the space of 20 deliveries. Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis accounted for the debacle. Sri Lanka takes 1-0 lead in the ODI series.
2nd ODI: Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs at R. Premadasa Stadium
Brief Scores: Bangladesh 248 in 45.5 overs (Parvez Hossain Emon 67, Towhid Hridoy 51, Tanzim Hasan Zakib 33 not out, Asitha Fernando 4-35, Wanindu Hasaranga 3-60) beat Sri Lanka 232 in 48.5 overs (Kusal Mendis 56, Kamindu Mendis 33, Janith Liyanage 78, Tanvir Islam 5-39) by 16 runs. Player of the Match: Tanvir Islam (Bangladesh).
In a close finish, Bangladesh came back strong to level the ODI series 1-1, with a 16-run win over hosts Sri Lanka. Batting first, the visitors scored a healthy 248 runs with Parvez Emon and Towhid Hridoy bearing the brunt of the batting with a cameo from Tanzim Hasan Zakib. Sri Lanka fell short by 16 runs despite a stout-hearted effort by Janith Liyanage who scored 78. Bangladesh bowler Tanvir Islam was Player of the Match for his 5-39 bowling figures.
3rd ODI: Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 99 runs at Pallekelle
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 285/7 (Kusal Mendis 124, Pathum Nissanka 35, Charith Asalanka 58, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 2-48) beat Bangladesh 186 in 39.4 overs (Towhid Hridoy 51, Mehidy Miraz 28, Jaker Ali 27, Asitha Fernando 3-33, Dushmantha Chameera 3-51, Dunith Wellalage 2-33) by 99 runs. Player of the Match: Kusal Mendis (SL). Player of the Series: Kusal Mendis (SL).
Led by Charith Asalanka, Sri Lanka clinched the ODI series 2-1. Kusal Mendis was Player of the Series for his consistent batting in all three ODI games. His 124 in 114 balls in the final match was a work of art. Mendis was also associated in a 124-run partnership with skipper Charith Asalanka who made 58 off 68. Sri Lanka’s 285 for 7 was too much, and Sri Lanka’s bowlers too penetrative. Bangladesh never really seemed to be on top of the chase, 20 for 2 in the fourth over, then 62 for 3 in the 14th. Towhid Hridoy made a half-century, but the required rate kept climbing, and Bangladesh could not mount a substantial enough partnership. They were all out for 186 in the 40th over.
Asitha Fernando was again the best of Sri Lanka’s bowlers, finding three wickets for 33 runs off seven overs, as he continued to target the stumps, as he has done all tour. Dushmantha Chameera attempted the shorter lengths, but found success with the fuller ones, bowling Hridoy with an especially memorable seaming delivery. He finished with 3 for 51 off eight overs. Wanindu Hasaranga and Dunith Wellalage took two apiece. Bangladesh will be proud of their bowling to the top order – they had Sri Lanka 100 for 3 at the end of the 21st over. And they also claimed four wickets in the last 10. But in between, Kusal and Asalanka put serious meat on the bones of this Sri Lanka batting effort.
T20I SERIES – BANGLADESH WON T20I SERIES 2-1
First T20I – Sri Lanka have beaten Bangladesh comprehensively by seven wickets in the first T20I at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Nissanka fell at a score of 46 from 18 balls. He hit five fours and three sixes in his knock and has continued his great consistency across formats. In this T20I match against Bangladesh, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis achieved a record-breaking opening partnership for Sri Lanka, surpassing the previous record for the most runs by a Sri Lankan opening pair in T20Is. Their explosive 78-run partnership off just 28 balls set a solid foundation for Sri Lanka’s victory. Eventually, Sri Lanka managed to score 83 runs in their initial six overs, registering their highest-ever Powerplay score in T20Is. Kusal Mendis was batting on 38 off 15 balls at the end of those six overs and went onto score 73 from 51 balls.

Sri Lanka was bundled out for 94 in 15.2 overs as Bangladesh won the second Twenty20 by 83 runs to level the three-match series at 1-1. It was Bangladesh’s second biggest T20 victory by runs. Bangladesh captain Litton Das scored a 50-ball 76, his first T20 half century after 13 games. He helped to lead Bangladesh to 177-7 in 20 overs after Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl.
In-form batter Kusal Mendis was run out in the second over of Sri Lanka’s reply and the hosts slipped to 30-4 inside the powerplay against fast bowler Shoriful Islam (2-12), one of the three changes Bangladesh made after losing the opening game.
Opening batter Pathum Nissanka (32) and Dasun Shanaka (20) were the only batters to cross the double-figure mark before Sri Lanka was bowled out with more than four overs to spare.
All five Bangladesh bowlers were among the wickets. Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain (3-18) finished off the match by having No. 10 batter Binura Fernando stumped. Nissanka was also stumped by Das off Hossain which ended the 41-ball partnership for the fifth wicket, and in the same 11th over Hossain caught and bowled Chamika Karunaratne (0) to leave Sri Lanka on 71-6.
Shanaka holed out at deep mid-wicket in the 12th over against off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz before Bangladesh wrapped up the tailenders quickly.
Third T20I: Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 8 wickets at R. Premadasa Stadium
Brief Scores: Bangladesh 133/2 in 16.3 overs (Tanzid Hasan 73 not out, Litton Das 32, Towhid Hridoy 27 not out) beat Sri Lanka 132/7 (Pathum Nissanka 46, Kamindu Mendis 21, Dasun Shanaka 35 not out, Mahedi Hasan 4-11) by 8 wickets.
Player of the Match: Mahedi Hasan (Bangladesh) – Player of the Series: Litton Das (Bangladesh).
Bangladesh outplayed Sri Lanka in the T20I series 2-1. Sri Lanka took the Test and ODI series, but Bangladesh stormed back in the T20Is, and they end the tour on a well-earned high. Lots of positives for both sides to take with the World Cup not far away, but also plenty to build on and think about. Sri Lanka Coach Sanath Jayasuriya confessed to making changes in the team in all three T20I matches in preparation for next year’s World Cup. Whatever said and done, Bangladesh team captain Litton Das and his team is congratulated for their comeback win in the T20I series. Well done!
Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Pathetic batting by the top order saw the hosts at 66/5 with Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, Charith Asalanka, and Pathum Nissanka all back in the pavilion. It was left to former skipper Dasun Shanaka to salvage what’s left, and he played a cameo innings to remain unbeaten on 35 in 25 balls with 4 hits to the fence and 2 sixes. Shanaka helped Sri Lanka score 132. Leading the way for the visitors was the returning Mahedi Hasan who ripped through the top order to end with figures of 4 for 11. Bangladesh was also outstanding in the field, despite a couple of hard dropped chances. On a surface that got stickier with the older ball, and spinners were a handful, Sri Lanka’s batters kept failing trying to hit out. Aside from Shanaka only Nissanka (46) at the top and Kamindu (21) later on managed to get to double figures.
Captain Shubman Gill shatters multiple records with maiden Test double century against England at Edgbaston

Shubman Gill etched his name in the history books after recording the reporting highest score (269) by an Indian captain in Test cricket history. India’s newly appointed captain Shubman Gill continued his magnificent form, smashing his maiden Test double hundred on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. After Gill resumed his knock – on overnight score of 114 not out, the Gujarat Titans IPL and India Test skipper once again was unstoppable on Day 2 as he played some scintillating shots to record his first double century in Test cricket. His majestic knock was laced with 30 fours and three sixes. While Gill was dismissed for 269, the Titans superstar shattered multiple records during his exceptional knock.
Shubman Gill scored a double century in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. He became the first Indian captain to achieve this feat in England. He also became the second Indian captain after MAK Pataudi to score a double century in Tests in the early stages of his career in Test cricket.
Additionally, he became the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to score a century and a double century in the same Test match. Gill’s double century was part of a record-breaking performance in the Edgbaston Test, where he also scored a century in the second innings. He accumulated a total of 430 runs in the match. This made him the batter with the second-highest aggregate of runs in a Test match. He also became the first Indian in 87 years to score more than 400 runs in a single Test match.
Skipper Shubman Gill concluded a record-breaking Birmingham Test against England with breathtaking knocks of 269 and 161 across both innings, making him the batter with the second-highest aggregate of runs in a Test match. While the first innings knock of 269 in 387 balls (with 30 fours and three sixes) was a marathon to tire out England bowlers simply, he pressed the accelerator in the second innings to construct a knock of 161 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes, which was just as mesmerising.
