Book Review Ichigo Ichie: The Japanese Art of Making the Most of Every Moment By Hector Garcia – By Donald Sarath Gunatillake

Source : Dæhæna – September 2025

The practice of mindfulness—known as Sathi in some cultures— has gained widespread recognition around the world for its ability to bring peace, clarity, and balance to the human mind. In an age
where distractions are constant and time feels fleeting, mindfulness reminds us of a simple but profound truth: each moment in life is unique and will never come again.

The Japanese expression Ichigo Ichie, often used when greeting or parting from someone, captures this essence beautifully. It conveys the idea that every encounter is special and unrepeatable—a onetime experience that deserves our full presence. In his latest book, Ichigo Ichie, Hector Garcia (co-author of the international bestseller Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life) delves into
this philosophy, offering readers practical guidance on how to live each moment with intention, awareness, and gratitude.

Garcia provides a range of actionable strategies to help readers bring mindfulness into their daily routines. He emphasizes that each second is precious and should be approached with care and consciousness. One of the core messages of the book is that many people either dwell in the past, burdened by regret, or anxiously await a future that may never arrive—losing the richness of the present in the process.

The author explores four primary emotions—anger, sadness, fear, and happiness—and discusses how these often pull us away from the now. Instead of letting time slip by unnoticed, Garcia urges us to
fully inhabit each moment, treating it as a singular event that will never happen again. He supports this with the timeless wisdom of the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who said, “No man ever

steps in the same river twice,” reminding us that everything around us—and within us—is in a constant state of change.

Another important theme in the book is the value of deep human connection. Garcia points out how modern distractions, such as smartphones and televisions, often prevent us from being truly present with others. He suggests simple but powerful practices for more meaningful interactions: disconnect from devices, pay close attention not only to what others say but how they say it, observe body language, and ask thoughtful, respectful questions. Through mindful communication, we can foster greater empathy, connection, and compassion.

Overall, Ichigo Ichie is a thoughtful and inspiring addition to any bookshelf. It offers a profound and practical exploration of mindfulness, encouraging readers to embrace the present with open
hearts and attentive minds. Garcia’s work is not only a guide to mindful living but also a reminder of the beauty and impermanence of life’s fleeting moments.

This book comes highly recommended for anyone seeking to cultivate deeper awareness and a richer, more meaningful life moment by moment.
