The St. Peter’s College I knew and loved Realization has gradually dawned on me that I am old, very old. Now, that I am 84 years, keeping young is problematic. It is fortunate that I am still restless, still anxious to learn and a voracious reader. Recollections of my early childhood bring back memories of attending the kindergarten standards one and two at Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya. I remember mother Cazima, an awesome and burly nun, who maintained strict discipline amongst us. It was time to move. The obvious choice was St. Peter’s College Colombo 4. In the late 1930s, St. Peter’s had no kindergarten hence the necessity to attend Holy Family. Boys I remember were Tony Don Michael, Ralph Forbes, Daffy Ingleton, Jeff Gamier and Jimmy Barucha. On the first day, my mother handed me over to the Principal of the Primary School, Father Arthur Fernando. He was a ...

How To Choose Olive Oil Olive oil is known as the best monounsaturated oil that promotes heart health. It is used universally as a popular cooking oil, especially Western dishes, and adding to salads to enhance that fruity taste. All olive oils are not the same. You should know which one you should purchase, from a health point of view. With no hesitation you should go for the Extra Virgin oil, more expensive than the other extracts, but the health qualities are unquestionable. It has abundant polyphenols, powerful antioxidants for good health and prevents cardiovascular disease. The premium brands are the unprocessed, cold pressed oils. They are obtained by crushing ripe olives into a mash and the first cold press is referred to as ‘Extra Virgin oil’. The best oils are produced when the picked olives are crushed within 24 hours of picking. If prolonged beyond this period the olives ...

D.W. ‘Bacon’ Abayakoon: Lawyer, Visionary and Grandfather – By Devoushi Cooray    Winston Churchill once said, “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.” In the recent history of Sri Lanka’s legal system, I believe that there has been no man who has done these words greater justice than my late grandfather, D.W. Abayakoon.  Looking Back  It was a Sunday morning, and I had just come back from brunch. My mother had been cleaning out her wardrobe, and discovered a small black box of newspaper clippings containing articles that dated back to when my grandfather had contested for the Bar Association Presidency. As I slowly read through the articles, I was reminded of a man; a man who in many ways I had always thought of as completely ordinary, yet in that moment, whose enduring courage, integrity and simplicity, seemed so extraordinary to me.  ...

THE WAY WE WERE… S. Skandakumar The year was 1965. At the conclusion of our traditional big match versus St Thomas’, the Royal team was summoned by the Principal and told that reciprocal matches had been initiated with schools in Jaffna and as a first step, the school’s cricket team was to proceed over the weekend, for an encounter with St. John’s College. So a team of 14 players, comprising of a Muslim captain, ten Sinhalese, two Tamils and one Burgher bundled into the Yal Devi the following Thursday, and arrived at the Jaffna railway station to a truly warm reception. Over the next two days we played some fascinating cricket before an unprecedented and enthusiastic crowd. A challenging declaration by our captain, on the second day, in the true spirit of the game, left the Johnians around 140 runs to make from 20 overs. Their talented players rose to ...
