And now that these are all a thing of the past, thanks to a truly People’s Government, it’s only logical that she would support it in the good things it is doing.
Whatever its detractors might say, this government within just a few months of assuming power accomplished a major system change, including:
1) Establishing Rule of Law, thus boosting public trust and investor confidence. Justice is now being dispensed to all without fear or favour and without the Police fearing Transfers or Judges fearing for their lives and coming up with Recusals. Not only ordinary citizens, but even tourists today feel safer now than ever before.
2) Winning International Support particularly from International Aid Agencies and the Japanese who unlike other powers do not have devious agendas. What this shows is the Trust this Government has earned from the International Community.
3) Cracking down on Corruption and Financial Crimes. No more scams with huge commissions for politically-connected individuals and profiteers in areas like medicine, sugar, bonds and visas. Transparency established with Zero Tolerance for Financial Crimes including Bribery.
4) Crackdown on Narcotics. No more space for bringing narcotics into the country. The big hauls by the Navy speak volumes for this and also shows the extent to which these dangerous drugs were being distributed here with the support of Politicians of the older regime. No more drug related killings in the prisons where one druglord was eliminated at the behest of others with the support of rogue elements of the Police and Involved Politicians which occurred in a big way during the Rajapakse regime.
5) No more Nepotism. No relative of a Minister/MP given any benefit. No Chief Minister or new Ambassador etc a relative. No more favouritism and Full accountability to the Public.
6) No more Bloody Racism and Zero Tolerance for Racist Politics or Hate Speech in any form. Perpetrators being dealt with and severe warnings given to any potential mischief makers from the top level of government downwards.
7) Reduction of MP’s/Ministers’ benefits with MP’s themselves voting to ban pensions for themselves among other privileges they previously enjoyed.
8.) Sharp reduction in expenses of President, Ministers and MPs including canteen, vehicles, security, ministers’ or mayors houses and the like. So much so that one Opposition MP was complaining about the simple fare served in the Parliament Canteen.

9) Poverty Alleviation. Increase in Social welfare payments such as the Aeswesuma payment, a targeted welfare package without room for any corruption or undeserving persons with eligibility determined by 22 indicators across 6 dimensions: assets, education, housing, income, health, and economic level. Other welfare schemes include farmers being conceded fertilizer subsidies, fishermen given subsidies for oil, and more welfare for pregnant women and school children.
10) Safeguarding environment. Strict Pollution Regulating mechanisms in place including prevention of water pollution where previously industrial or domestic waste was simply chanelled to our waterways with impunity, but is no longer possible now.
11) Encouraging religious institutions to open up their coffers to help in National Rebuilding. The major temples with immense wealth are donating a good part of it for national development, the most recent case being the Kataragama Devale which is auctioning off 70 percent of its gold reserves collected over centuries for the Government’s Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund.
12) Immediate disaster relief as we saw in the recent flood and landslide situation. Not a single cent went to line up corrupt politicians pockets as the Rajapakses did with theTsunami Funds.
So thank you, Madame, that’s the attitude, so unlike the reactionary UNP, SJB, SLPP and other opposition parties whose only purpose now seems to be sabotaging the good work the government is doing, with the sole objective of taking the nation back to its horrible, corrupt past.
Thank you Madame, RESPECT!
