This book celebrates the feats of players from Melbourne Grammar School and Sydney Grammar School in this historic
and oldest continuing inter-colonial (interstate) cricket match in Australia which started in 1876.

The author, James Cattlin, a ‘Grammar boy’ who captained SGS in 1960 and 1961, is truly inspired by his passion for cricket and his participation in the rivalry between the two schools which has garnered life-long friendships.

The descriptions of matches are interspersed with a profile of several important early representative players, such as the enigmatic RC Allen, AP Jones, Tibby Cotter, WM Bruce, Ted a’Beckett and the Barbour family.

MGS v SGS

It is interesting to compare the terms and language of yesteryear with those used today. Following the progress of each match gives the reader a feel of the rivalry and effort put in by the players in an annual match which was regarded by both schools as the real test of their strength, the pinnacle of their season’s effort with the reputation of the school on the line. It’s a cricket book for cricketers and a permanent record of their achievements and failings for all to read in one volume.

Alan McGilvray, SGS and NSW cricket captain, legendary broadcaster and first President of the Old Sydneians’ Cricket Club, spoke the following words when he was addressing a reception for the two schools’ teams.

“The cricket you play at school will be the most enjoyable of your lives, don’t’ forget it”.

The book is for sale at a cost of $50.00 (GST included). Postage, if applicable, will cost $10.00 in the Sydney Metro
