Demise of Professor Rohan Jayasundera – Former Old Boy of St Joseph’s College Colombo

Rohan Jayasundera passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at the University Medical Centre in New Orleans, at the age of 69.

Beloved husband for 48 years of Jacintha Jayasundera (nee Dhanapala); dedicated father of Ranil Jayasundera (Erin) and Kishanie Jayasundera (Jason); devoted grandfather of Mason, Sloane and Zara; dutiful son of Miriam Jayasundera; and proud brother of Greg Jayasundera (Shyami) and uncle of Manishya Jayasundera. In addition, Rohan was a loving, respected and cherished brother-in-law, uncle, friend, colleague and mentor to many.

Rohan was born in 1954 in Sri Lanka and migrated to Canada, settling in Waterloo in 1974. Rohan was an award winning Professor of Physics at the University of Waterloo where he taught for 38 years. Rohan was an athlete, a scholar, a true gentleman, and a faithful servant of Christ and he will be remembered for his infectious smile, spirit, and love for his family and friends.

Rohan’s family will receive relatives and friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2nd, 2023 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener. Prayers will take place at 7:45pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 3rd, 2023 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 80 University Ave. W., Waterloo. Immediately following the service, a reception will follow in the church hall.

As expressions of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations to Nutrition for Learning-Waterloo Region would be appreciated by the family (cards will be available at the funeral home).
