Dear Fellow Thomians, family and friends,

The Transfiguration of our Lord is the annual feast celebrating Jesus’ remarkable change of appearance, “on a high mountain”, with Peter, James, and John present. The event is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. The Apostle Peter, in his second Epistle affirms, “We were eyewitnesses of His majesty…” The Transfiguration revealed Christ’s glory prior to the crucifixion and anticipated His resurrection and ascension.

The history of the celebration of the Transfiguration began in the Eastern Church in the late fourth century. The feast is celebrated on August 6, the date of the dedication of the first church built on Mount Tabor, which is traditionally considered to be the “high mountain” of the Transfiguration.

The Chapel of the Transguration, S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia,  was consecrated by the Rt Rev’d Mark R. Carpenter-Garnier, Bishop of Colombo, on the 12th of February 1927. Set on the highest point of the campus, it symbolises the centrality of faith to the education offered by the school, and is valued by adherents of all faiths in the College.

The inaugural Service was held at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney on 5th August 2017, led by The Dean, Rev. Kanishka Raffel, an Old Thomian, who today is the Archbishop of Sydney.

The annual celebration has continued, broken only by COVID.

On Sunday, 4th August 2024, we will have the privilege of the participation of Rev. Simon Flinders, Archdeacon to The Archbishop, as Preacher. Rev. Flinders was, for many years, Associate Pastor at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, North Sydney. At this service we will also welcome Nicholas Morley, who succeeds Godelieve Ghavalas as STC’s valued Organist.

A Thomian welcome awaits on Sunday the 4th of August at 6:30 pm at All Saints Anglican Church North Parramatta.
