Health Minister urges expatriate specialist doctors in the UK to return and serve Sri Lanka
Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, who was in the United Kingdom, urged Sri Lankan specialist doctors working abroad to return home and resume service in the country.
He made this appeal while addressing a gathering of Sri Lankan medical professionals in the UK, organised by the Sri Lankan High Commission during his recent visit.
The Minister highlighted the current shortage of specialist doctors in Sri Lanka and emphasised that their expertise is urgently needed to strengthen the nation’s health system. He noted that training a specialist doctor takes years of rigorous education and significant financial investment, underscoring that those who qualified in Sri Lanka have a duty to serve their motherland during this critical period.
Dr. Jayatissa further assured that doctors returning to Sri Lanka would be reinstated in their appropriate positions with full service privileges and facilities. He said the government is committed to providing all necessary support to ensure a smooth transition back into the public health system.
The event in London was organised by the Sri Lankan High Commission in collaboration with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), which invited the Sri Lankan delegation to the United Kingdom.
The visiting delegation included Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara, Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs Saroja Savitri Paulraj, and Deputy Secretary-General of Parliament Hansa Abeyrathne.
A large number of Sri Lankan specialist doctors and medical professionals based in the UK attended the meeting
