Bradman Weerakoon, a legendary figure in Sri Lanka’s public administration, has passed away at the age of 94. Joining the Ceylon Civil Service in 1954, Mr. Weerakoon held numerous key administrative positions across the island. He notably served as Secretary to Prime Minister Sir John Kotelawala and went on to serve under seven Prime Ministers and three Presidents, remaining an influential figure in government until 2002. His decades-long contribution to the Sri Lankan state has left an indelible mark on the nation’s civil service and political history.
He studied at Holy Cross College, Kalutara and later was one of the first boarding students at St. Thomas’s College, Guruthalawa. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree with second class honours (upper division) in economics and sociology from the University of Ceylon and was awarded a Fullbright scholarship to study at the University of Michigan for one year where he did his MA in Sociology.
Deshamanya Bradman Weerakoon’s death marks the end of an era for a public servant who dedicated his life to serving the country through various high-ranking positions under nine presidents and prime ministers. Weerakoon’s contributions to the nation were monumental, as he played a vital role in shaping policies and governance during a transformative period in Sri Lanka’s history.
