Australia and South Africa’s cricket rivalry is set to light up Far North Queensland this week, with captains Mitch Marsh and Temba Bavuma officially launching the ODI series trophy in Cairns today.
The two sides, fresh from their T20 International series, will renew their contest in the 50-over format with three ODIs at Cazalys Stadium, beginning on Thursday.
Marsh, leading Australia in the absence of Pat Cummins, said the team was looking forward to the challenge of switching formats.
“South Africa are always a tough opponent and playing them here in Cairns is a unique experience for both teams. The boys are excited to get into the ODI series and build momentum leading into a big summer of cricket,” Marsh said.
Bavuma echoed the anticipation, highlighting the importance of the series for South Africa.
“Australia are a quality side, and these matches are a great test for us. We’ve enjoyed our time in Cairns so far and are keen to put on strong performances for the fans here,” Bavuma said.
The captains came together this morning for a ceremonial photo shoot, unveiling the ODI trophy against the tropical backdrop of Cairns.
The three-match ODI series runs from August 19–24, with matches scheduled at Cazalys Stadium Cairns and Great Barrier Reef Arena Mackay.
