A former rebel returns home from military detention searching for his missing lover whose plight was yet to be revealed by the rebel’s soothsaying mother.

Synopsis

Rudran, an ex-Tamil militant returns home from military detention, looking for his lover Vaani who had disappeared during the war. Rudran’s mother, Sellamma who is gifted with a ‘boon’ of soothsaying, tells the locals whether their kith and kin are alive or dead, but she refuses to say the same about Vaani. While men and women defeated in the war find solace in massive Hindu temples, Rudran initially refuses to pray, but later in an act of desperation, he joins a month-long pilgrimage seeking help from God Ayyappa, hoping to unite with his lover.

Background

The three decade long ethnic war in Sri Lanka ended in 2009 by Singhalese dominant government forces defeating the Tamil Tiger rebels. As the Sinhalese majoritarian government continued to celebrate the victory, neither the government forces nor the pro-Tamil Tiger groups showed willingness to be accountable for the crimes they have committed against civilians during the war. Thousands of Tamil men and women were taken into military custody at the end of the war but only some of them like our protagonist Rudran returned home alive, and they too maintained a code of silence about what happened in detention. Munnel is based on real life events and the screenwriter/Director Visakesa Chandrasekaram’s experiences of working as a human rights lawyer in Sri Lanka. Some of the cast and crew members are survivors of the war.

Munnel probably is the only Sri Lankan film came out of the recent political and economic crisis in Sri Lanka. During chaotic power cuts, fuel shortage and tremendously rising cost of living, the cast and crew worked hard against all odds to complete the film. While the film was shot in the North of the island, the Southern part was trembled by the occupied movement in Colombo and the subsequent violence. Munnel is probably the first home-grown Tamil film of which most the cast and crew members came from the Tamil speaking North and East. Also, the film introduces several debut artists: Director of Photography Rishi Selvam; Music Composer Pathmayan Sivananthan, and several actors including Sivakumar Lingeswaran (Rudran) and Thurkka Magendran (Vaani).

Screenwriter/Director Visakesa Chandrasekaram

Visakesa Chandrasekaram is a lawyer, academic and an artist. He has made two feature films –  Sayapethi Kusuma (Frangipani) and Paangshu (Earth) which won many local and international awards. He has published two novels – Tigers Don’t Confess and The King and the Assassin. He has written and directed several stage plays including Forbidden Area, which won the Gratiean Prize. Visakesa has worked in Sri Lanka as a human rights lawyer and in Australia as a consultant to the NSW Government. He has received a doctorate from the Australian National University for his research on the use of confessionary evidence under counter-terrorism laws. He currently works as a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law in University of Colombo.

In Memory of Pearl Jennet Fonseka

As the hyped up Ashes series gains momentum, and the gloves are off for a feisty battle, this series definitely has the trimmings of a blockbuster as cricket mad Aussies gather to meet England's challenge and matching barbs with the Barmy Army.  Much has been written and debated about the clash of cricket's titans which will remain unrivalled in terms of the game's origins that will continue in its entirety.  While pundits and analysts decipher the intricacies, I take a different approach to my assessments and predictions about how this series will play out. Statistics and predictions on past performance has no real relevance in this case much like picking a Melbourne Cup winner. Looking at the two combatants, I see two potent bowling attacks that will prove pivotal to deciding this series pretty much on the proviso, the key bowlers stay healthy.  Both teams have batting that reaches deep, but here is where Australia hold a decided whip hand.  Australia has an influx of talent that is available to be tapped into, England not so deep. Therein lies the possible advantage to the Aussies apart from home conditions that the tourists will take time to adjust.  The evolving methods of pitch preparation gives England no advantage in strategic planning,  but Australia may have some inside insights as most home team's do these days although there's no guarantees in this game of uncertainty.  Pushed in to the domestic program has given the Aussies time to assess playing conditions and the nature of the pitches in the five Tests before the big dance. Australia's dilemmas, if it is, focus around getting the batting and team makeup right, more so the batting order because of the injuries to key pacemen , skipper Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood which makes it intriguing and let's England in with a chance. England for their part, are projecting an air of cool confidence having already finalised their battle plans. But that facade could well hide their innermost feeling of uncertainty against a known adversity that is drilled to not buckle down. No matter what.  My prediction rests on Australia's batters led by stand in skipper Steve Smith and a line-up that runs down to number eleven to tip the scales in Australia's favour.  It will be the hinge on success or disaster against an England attack that is as potent as Steve Smith's men with Joffer Archer, Mark Wood and skipper Ben Stokes's spearheading an attack that has plenty of variety in a closely talented duel between cricket's greatest rivals. Mitchell Stark leads a fiery Australian attack and although missing Cummins and Hazelwood, is still potent with Ben Duckett, Scott Boland and Michael Nesser to choose from. If Duckett and Boland are both selected,  it will be a landmark decision of two indigenous players representing Australia for the very first time.  My prediction is Australia 4-1 or 3-2 but the contests will be riveting. Can't see a draw in excellent Aussie conditions
