Pigeon Island: A Marine National Park for an Exotic Underwater Experience – By Nadeeka – eLanka

Pigeon Island is a small island located off the east coast of Sri Lanka, near the town of Trincomalee. The island is a part of the Pigeon Island National Park, which was established in 2003 to protect the marine ecosystem and the diversity of marine life in the area. The park covers an area of 471.43 acres and is home to a variety of exotic marine life, including turtles, sharks, and colorful fish.

The island is named after the rock pigeon, which used to inhabit the island in large numbers. However, due to human intervention and the increasing number of visitors, the population of rock pigeons has significantly decreased. Today, the island is primarily known for its underwater attractions and is a popular destination for snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts.

The Marine Life of Pigeon Island

Pigeon Island is home to over 100 species of coral and more than 300 species of fish. The marine ecosystem is diverse, and visitors can see a variety of marine life, including Hawksbill turtles, Green turtles, Blacktip reef sharks, and Whitetip reef sharks. The island is also home to many colorful fish, including Parrotfish, Angelfish, Butterflyfish, and Pufferfish.

The coral reefs surrounding the island are among the healthiest in Sri Lanka, and visitors can witness the stunning coral gardens up close. The marine ecosystem in Pigeon Island is fragile, and visitors are advised to take care not to touch or damage the coral reefs.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving in Pigeon Island

Snorkeling and scuba diving are the primary activities that visitors can enjoy in Pigeon Island. The crystal clear waters surrounding the island make it an ideal location for these activities, and visitors can witness the stunning underwater landscape and marine life.

Snorkeling is an easy and fun activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The shallow waters around the island make it an ideal location for beginners, and visitors can see a variety of fish and coral up close. Snorkeling gear can be rented at the entrance to the park.

For more experienced divers, scuba diving is an excellent way to explore the deeper waters surrounding the island. The diving sites around Pigeon Island offer a variety of underwater landscapes, including rocky outcrops, caves, and coral gardens. The diving sites are accessible by boat, and there are several diving schools in the nearby town of Trincomalee that offer diving courses and guided dives.

Conservation Efforts in Pigeon Island

Pigeon Island is a protected area, and several conservation efforts have been implemented to preserve the fragile marine ecosystem. Fishing and other destructive activities are prohibited in the park, and visitors are advised to follow the park’s rules and regulations.

The park also has a visitor center that provides information about the marine life and conservation efforts in the area. The visitor center also offers educational programs for school children and organizes beach cleanups and other conservation activities.

In Conclusion

Pigeon Island is a hidden gem in Sri Lanka, offering an exotic underwater experience for visitors. The island’s marine ecosystem is diverse and home to a variety of exotic marine life, making it an ideal destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. The park’s conservation efforts ensure that the marine ecosystem is preserved for future generations to enjoy. A visit to Pigeon Island is a must for anyone looking for an unforgettable underwater experience.
