Muslims around the world are currently observing Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. This year, the ‘month’ is between 13 April and 12 May. As every year, fasting involves abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk, and focusing on improving our relationship with Allah (God) through fasting, worship and charity. Fasting is a test of mental and physical will and teaches us compassion and to care for the less privileged. Fasting reminds us of the oneness and omnipresence of God and is a special task between Him and us. Ramadan is also a time of extra prayers, worship and charity.

For Muslims in Australia, Ramadan 2021 is cautiously returning to normal with communal activities of prayer, charity and sharing of meals at the close of the fast known as ‘iftar’. This is in stark contrastto 2020 where strict restrictions did not allow this. Many other countries around the world are still gripped by the pandemic and will
spend Ramadan with varying levels of freedom.
