SRI JAYAMINI ATTANAYAKE REPUTED JOURNALIST APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF MEDIA AND CORDINATOR OF KANDY DISTRICT BY THE ‘UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATION’ – By Sunil Thenabadu

Sri Jayamini Attanayake: versatile Lake House journalist was chosen as the Director of Media and Social Co-ordinator for the Kandy District by the “UNIVERSAL Human Rights Organization (UHRO) The appointment was conferred on her by the Organization’s Director General, Mr. K.D. Indrajith (MAF), during a special Social Welfare Festival organized by UHRO last August in Anuradhapura.
Jayamini had commenced her journalism profession at Lake House during the tenure when she was pursuing her studies at the University of Kelaniya. In year 2002 , she received her professional training under Mr. Piyal Samaraweera, a former editor of Lankadeepa -Vijaya Children’s Newspaper. She began her career as a Sub Editor at the Mihira children’s newspaper of Lake House which to date she has completed 15 years of proficiency in journalism.

In year 2010, during Sri Lanka’s first-ever Women Journalists’ Awards Ceremony organized by the Ministry of Mass Media and Information, she was recognized to be awarded the upcoming woman Journalist in Sinhala Print Media (Creative Feature Writing Category). She was later awarded the honorary title of “”Kalawedi Jana Madya Shiromani”” (Media Excellence in the Arts) by the All Ceylon Welfare Federation..

In recent years, she has travelled overseas to several countries as an assistant media professional attached to an international media project in China .At the end of 2019, after returning to Sri Lanka, she established her Media Academy alongside her already functioning “Sri Jayamini Music Institute.” Through this academy, she continues to teach mass communication, media studies, both Eastern and Western music versions to Sri Lankan children..
At present, she is a Sangeeth Visharad having graduated from the Bhatkhande Music University in Lucknow India. She has engaged in music research affiliated with Bhatkhande had received advanced training in classical music and research under foremost “gurus” at the Lucknow Also studied Garanas which is another traditional music genre in India.

She had obtained her Bachelor’s Degree special in Music (Lalithakala) from the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Sri Lanka and served for several years as a music teacher at JMC International College, Colombo. She has worked as a member of the editorial teams of Lake House, Mihira, Sarasaviya, Dinamina,Rasaduna and Silumina newspapers.
Additionally, she works as a “music therapist-cum music teacher at the “Diri Daru Piyasa” unit for the contrarily disabled children unit under the veteran dance director Miranda Hemalatha.

In year 2005, she released her independent music album titled “Mata Kiyanna Awasara” (Allow Me to Speak), which was presented to the legendary musician Pandit W.D. Amaradeva.The album includes songs written by veteran lyricists such as Ratna Sri Wijesinghe, Yamuna Malini Perera, George Robson de Silva, Thanuja Dharmapala, Shantha Kumara Vithana, and Saman Chandranath Weerasinghe, for the music compositions of Dr Rohana Weerasinghe,, Navaratna Gamage, Priyantha Direx ,Hemalal Geethadeva and Jayamini Attanayake herself..

As a singer, her popular songs include “Sudu Sina Sedellen,” “Madhu Sihine,” “Kandulu Diyavela,” “Biriyosa Mathakaya,” and “Wana Mal Arana Pura.” These music videos have gained her wide recognition among, vivid audiences and media.

She had obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Lalithakala (Fine Arts) from the University of Kelaniya in 2005 her Postgraduate Diploma in Writership and Mass Communication from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura University in 2010, later the Advance English Degree of ICBT campus in Bamabalapitiya, in 2017 earned her Master’s Degree in Mass Communication from the Kelaniya University while she is currently reading for her MA in Music also in Kelaniya university.
In the context of the above it is very evident the gigantic quantum of contributions she had made to art and music which only a few others had achieved in the annals of music narration in the archives in our country. All music lovers would wish her well in her future journey in the music arena as a force to be recognised and reckoned with…
