Sri Lanka After Cyclone Ditwar: Resilience Amid Ruin – Dr Harold Gunatillake

Cyclone Ditwar hit Sri Lanka in late November and early December 2025, bringing extraordinary rainfall that led to extensive flooding and landslides in all 25 districts. Unfortunately, the storm resulted in over 640 lives lost and caused economic damages estimated between $1.6 and $7 billion. It stands out as the most devastating disaster since the 2004 tsunami.
Despite the devastation, the resilience of the Sri Lankan people truly shines. Communities came together, neighbours supported one another, and everyday citizens performed remarkable acts of kindness. Relief efforts weren’t just about rebuilding homes and infrastructure; they were about strengthening the bonds of unity that truly make the island resilient.
Sri Lanka has endured economic crises and natural disasters before, but each time the nation has found strength in solidarity. The legacy of resilience—rooted in centuries of overcoming adversity, from ancient irrigation feats to modern recovery efforts—remains a guiding force. Ditwar’s destruction is profound, but it has also rekindled a collective determination: to rebuild stronger, to protect the vulnerable, and to ensure that the resplendent island continues to thrive against the odds.
The devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwar was truly heartbreaking, but it also showcased the incredible resilience and strength of Sri Lanka’s people. Their unwavering spirit in the face of such adversity is truly inspiring.
Ditwar’s Wrath
The skies broke open, a torrent untamed,
Across twenty-five districts, the storm proclaimed. Homes were swallowed, rivers turned wide, Mountains wept in landslides, nowhere to hide.
Over six hundred souls, taken too soon,
The nation mourned beneath a grieving monsoon. Billions in losses, the economy scarred,
Yet hearts beat stronger, though futures marred.
Resplendent Isle
From the ruins, a spirit shines bright,
Neighbours lifting neighbours through the night. Hands clasped firmly, voices unite,
Resilience rises in the fading light.
We have known disaster, the tsunami’s cruel wave, But each time we rise, each time we are brave.
Sri Lanka endures, her people stand tall, Together we heal, together through all.
Hope Rekindled
Though Ditwar carved wounds deep and wide, Compassion flows like an endless tide.
From rubble and rain, new strength is born,
A resplendent country, though battered, not torn.
