“Swara:”  An Evening of Musical Harmony by Young Minds at Lyceum Nugegoda

Swara 01

In a splendid showcase of cultural fusion, Lyceum International School in Nugegoda hosted the enthralling musical evening, “Swara,” presented by its Eastern music students. The event witnessed a harmonious blend of local folk tunes infused with the rhythmic cadence of Hindustani music, seamlessly transitioning into the contemporary sounds of Sri Lankan music.

“Swara” emerged as a unique initiative by Lyceum as an international school, aiming to globalize the richness of Eastern music by imparting a sense of locality to its diverse souls of students. The entire production, from lyric selection to decoration and announcements, was driven by the creative concepts of the students themselves. Folk Musicologist, Visharad Mr. Dilum Niranja, the Head of Eastern Music of Lyceum International Schools, believes that this initiative marks a pivotal moment in the recognition and understanding of local musical arts within international school education.

Dr. Mohan Lal Grero, founder of Lyceum Schools, who spoke on the occasion, said that “Team Swara‘s” effort to make the statement “the artistic begins with joy and ends with intelligence” a reality will be the beginning of an indelible journey.

Addressing the audience, Mr. Rajiv Ekanayake, the Principal of Nugegoda Lyceum School, acknowledged the dedication of the academic staff in the Eastern Music Department. He highlighted their efforts in training students who are learning in English Medium to seamlessly perform local music on stage, attributing it to the success of the event.

Dr. Nishad Handunpathirana, Additional Secretary (School Affairs) at the Ministry of Education, Lyceum International School Founder Dr. Mohan Lal Grero, Coordinating Principal Dr. Kumari Grero, and Senior Lecturer at the University of Visual and Fine Arts, Rasika Kothalawala, were graced as distinguished guests at “Swara.”

The event also witnessed the presence of school management and parents, adding to the grandeur of “Swara.“
