Carva at Walekade and the Cosmo Lounge is the new Sri Lankan dining experience with a difference. By Trevine Rodrigo in Melbourne

Uncovering gems for dining out is becoming a challenge these days with the huge number of Sri Lankan foodie adventurers in Melbourne churning out innovative ideas and delectable menus that makes the choice abundant.

It was through sheer coincidence that we discovered Carva @ Walekade when Anne and I attended grandson Austin’s birthday party at a play centre owned and run by Sura Vithana and partner Ann Fernando.
Happily for us, it happens to be in our new neck of the woods in fast growing suburb of Cranbourne West. So the attraction is greater.
The two function centres are linked in the same building which in itself is a novel concept. It offers parents and even their young kids to have fun simultaneously with plenty of staff to offer supervision if needed.
After an initial introduction, Sura, a genial function owner, gave us a tour of the facility with an outline of what it had to offer.
There’s the Cosmo Lounge for formal occasions that can seat 100 with a bandstand. It reduces to an 80 capacity if dancing is requested, said the owners.
Sura invited us to take in the scene a few weeks later, and we definitely left impressed by a happy night, even joining the Karaoke singers to feel inclusive.
The concept is ideal for young families, and our initial observation supported this, but it offers everyone a guarantee of a night of food with a difference from the usual Sri Lankan cuisines in Melbourne, and live entertainment to add to the vibe.
Karaoke is another novel feature that gives all an invitation to join in the evening’s fun making it a place you want to be for a fun night.
The menu is like no other and at its infancy, was first class. It was launched a few weeks ago, with the name Carva at Walekade explaining the Carvery selection which is scrumptious.
There’s a wide array of accompaniments that go with it, and for the traditional, a Sri Lankan selection is available on the A -La- Carte menu which gives all a choice.

What also makes it more attractive than most is the open offer to bring your own alcohol with no corkage. Drinks are also available at the bar. Seeing it is at its launch stage, the possibilities are immense.

Thanks for your contribution to the photos and video footage Michael Prins. Sura and Ann have put out a brief description of the facilities on offer below.
