Obituaries – Sad News

Dr. Ranjit Weerakoon (85) of Lexington, Kentucky, USA, passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 13, 2026. He was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and graduated from the University of Peradeniya medical college and later served in government hospitals for several years. Husband of Indra, father of Suneth and Anushi and Samantha. Dr. Ranjit was a seasoned internal medicine physician and served in Gaston County with Caremont health for 26 years.

Arjuna (ARJ) Hulugalle passed away in Colombo on July 31st, 2026. Husband of the late Sally, father of Usha, Priya, Darshan and Buddhika. Grandfather of Anoushka, Chloe, Amrit, Leah, Catherine, Anya, Sumith, Kyra and Sienna. Son of Herbert and Lillian Hulugalle. Brother of Lilamani, Ranjan Sr., late Damayanthi Upatissa, Haris and Lakdasa. Cremation was on August 1st at the New Crematorium in Kanatte.
Priyani Fernando – Wife of Angelo, mother of Sanesh and Seshika, mother-in-law of Shivanka and Suren, grandmother of Sashinka, Ezra, Hazel and Izaiah. Funeral Service was on August 26th at St. Anthony’s Church, Mount Lavinia, followed by Burial at General Cemetery (Nisala Sevana), Mount Lavinia.
Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen

Liver Hath Maalu (Liver with Seven Vegetables)
Ingredients
- 1/4 lb. Capsicums (Maalu Miris)
- 1/4 lb. Large red onions
- 1/4lb. Ash Plantains (Alu Kehel OR Unripe Green Burros-Available in Mexican Markets)
- 1lb. Liver
- 1 tspn. Pepper powder
- 1 1/2 tspns. corriander powder
- 1/4 lb. Potatoes
- 1/4 lb. Eggplant/Brinjals/Aubergine (whichever ONE you call them)
- 1/4 lb. tomato
- 3 tspns. Chillie powder (or less to your preference)
- 1 tspn. mustard seeds crushed
- 4 tspns.Vinegar
- 3 tspns. salt
- 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
- 2″ piece cinnamon
- oil for deep frying
- 3 Tbspns. oil
- 5 cloves garlic finely chopped
- 6 ozs. coconut milk
- a sprig of curry leaves
- 2 cardomons
- 2 cloves
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 ozs. Bombay onions sliced.
Method
1. Peel red onions and set aside. Peel plantains, cut into 1/2″ cubes, rub with turmeric and set aside.Wash,dry and cut brinjals into 1/2″ cubes, cut capsicums into four, wash and cut potatoes into 1/2″ cubes, tomatoes into four and liver into 1/2″ cubes after having washed and having removed the skin. Keep all of these aside.
2. Heat oil for deep frying and deep fry potatoes, brinjals and plantains separately until they are light brown.
3. Dip red oinons, chillies, tomatoes in the deep fat and remove immediately.
4. Heat oil, sliced onions, curry leaves, liver, garlic, cloves cardomoms and cinnamon and allow to cook for about 8-10 minutes. Then add coconut milk, curry powders, salt, pepper, vinegar, fenugreek and mustard.Cook a further few minutes.
5. Add the fried vegetables. Simmer for 10 minutes more.
This curry may be served with Yellow Rice OR Ghee Rice.

This one is called “Nihal & Natasha’s 6-Day Cruise to Cabo San Lucas.”
It follows Nihal, a Sri Lankan husband, and his Russian wife Natasha as they set sail from Long Beach for what is supposed to be a relaxing and romantic six-day cruise to Cabo. Unfortunately for Natasha, Nihal discovers the all-you-can-eat buffet! From seasickness and tequila in Cabo to formal night, the casino, and the frightening final cruise bill, their romantic vacation quickly turns into complete comedy.
By the end of the cruise, Natasha has a beautiful tan, Nihal has gained 11 pounds, the casino has his money, the bar has made record profits, and the buffet manager is requesting a transfer to another ship! ![]()

The moral of the story:
A Sri Lankan husband and a Russian wife can survive six days together on a cruise ship… but the buffet may never recover!
