AN APPRECIATION –  Enjoy life whilst you can before it is too late – by Charles Schokman

It is with deep sorrow that I report the death of Fred (affectionately known as Freddie) La Brooy.  He and his parents were neighbours and good family friends of ours in Sri Lanka, spanning a period of 81 years. We came to know each other during World War 2, well remembering Sunday 6th April 1942 when the Japanese raided Colombo.
We were a close knit family and hold many memories, both happy and sad that came our way on life’s journey. I remember Freddie as a handsome young lad very energetic who loved his sports and Therese for her beauty as she was known as the “Belle of  Dematagoda.”

This bonding continued with Fred, his wife Therese and family even after we migrated to Australia.
The sad news that penetrates my heart most is that within a short period of three years I lost the friendship of a dear family. Therese passed away on the 9th June 2020, Everton their son on the 5th August 2020 and then Freddie on the 22nd of July 2023.

However, amidst this sadness, and as I reflect on their lives, it gives me great satisfaction to realise that they have not lived this life in vain. They enjoyed life to its fullness not missing the opportunities that came their way. They were actively involved in many Sri Lankan organisations and will be greatly missed.

The attached clip demonstrates their family life of togetherness, in it is Freddie, Therese and Everton enjoying a happy occasion with a friend.

God in His mercy has taken them to His loving care. May their souls rest in peace.
Charles.
