With the recent rains and the fresh growth of grass, the elephants are attracted to these areas. However, some have gone on to destroy crops, and villagers fear they may intrude into the villages. Villagers say they don’t mind the herd, but they fear individual elephants who could break away from the herd and enter villages. Bogambara Prison to become hotel, mall complex – Minister Source:Dailynews The Bogambara prison, a historical site with rich architectural heritage, is set to be transformed into a hotel complex, announced Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga. A private investor will spearhead this initiative. Assigned to the Urban Development Authority (UDA) in 2014, Bogambara Prison is undergoing redevelopment as part of the Greater Kandy Development Plan and the Kandy City Development Plan. Efforts are underway to preserve the prison’s colonial architecture while adapting the main building for new uses. According to E.M.S.B. Lankan indigenous community shares genetic bonds with Indian tribal groups-Study-by Gayan Suriya Arachci Source:Dailymirror The indigenous community of Sri Lanka shares close genetic bonds with five Indian tribal groups, a study by a team of scientists at the University of Colombo reveals. A team of Sri Lankan scientists has found that the Vedda share a strong genetic similarity with the Austroasiatic Munda-speaking Santhal and Juang tribes in Odisha and the Dravidian-speaking Irula, Paniya and Pallar found in Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. The research was carried out by Dr. Ruwandi Ranasinghe, Prof. Kamani Thennakoon, Prof Gamini Adikari, Anjala Welikala and Amali Fernando along with  a team at the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the University of Colombo. She dedicated 41 years to government service and reached the pinnacle of her profession before retiring and working abroad. She spent a few years in Norway and Saudi Arabia before returning home to Sri Lanka after the tragic loss of our sister in a Russian accident. For the next 20 years, she worked tirelessly in private hospitals across the country, including Nawaloka, Asiri, Central, Delmon in Colombo, and Philips in Kalutara, near our home in Matugama. Her final assignment was at Philips Hospital, where she trained young nurses. Despite her reluctance, she retired at the age of 80. Sadly, she passed away at the age of 83.
