Bonsai is the Japanese and East Asian art of growing miniature trees in containers. It is developed from the Chinese art form of penjing. Bonsai uses cultivation technology like pruning, root reduction, potting, deformation and grafting.

The Sri lanka Bonsai association had an exhibition a month back where many specimens owned by association members were displayed. Some of the specimens were 10 plus years old ,that shows the dedication towards the art. If you have passion, commitment and are willing to put a couple of hrs on a daily basis and most importantly show love for the plant, you will be able to unlock the doors to this traditional art form which can soothe the mind.

The Association has been in existence since 1989.I want to thank the association for the efforts that the members have put to increase awareness and also bring about individuals to practice the art of Bonsai growing. Both young and old can do it with minimum supervision after sometime.

Case study –
Bonsai reminds me of investments , be it Equity based or Fixed income based. You start with an investment, overtime by meticulously study market movements and also guidance from experts you can reap rewards,

Equity can be rewarding, yes it is unpredictable, advisable to make a portfolio which would lean towards selective diversified entities, or stable Industry led entities, the rewards could exceed Fixed Income based instruments.

Some of us invest through a stockbroker, some direct, through equity based unit trust funds it could be open ended or closed based on the fund management strategy.

Some of us have private portfolio based investments managed by a fund manager, it depends on the risk appetite.

Same with Fixed Income you could opt for Gilt -Edged based instruments (Tbills, bonds, repos) backed by Central Bank, which is safe or divest Into rating based instruments either Fitch or local. Portfolios can be made using traditional instruments like Bank and Finance company deposits ,unit trusts depending on the pool that is created inters of risk parameters, Fixed investment based portfolio investments, and also Insurance with investment plans.

Each individual’s investment pattern is different and requirements are different, however its advisable to do a lot of research and come up with a strategic plan interms of wealth creation.

Bonsai cultivating goes apt with this case study, it follows similar patterns, the effort depends on each individual what he or she wants to achieve.

Wishing everyone success in trying out this wonderful artform which soothes the mind please get in touch with someone at the association they do have workshops and events and also wishing everyone success in their investment goals.
