Alcoholic Drinks When Having Diabetes by Dr. Harold Gunatillake – Health writer Yes, true, people having raised blood sugar need to be careful drinking alcohol. They still can enjoy a drink or two without guilt, but intelligent drinking is the solution. Men with diabetes can still enjoy two drinks a day, just like the non-diabetics and women too can have just one drink a day. A sugary drink like a cocktail can raise your blood sugar, and if you are on insulin medication you could whack small insulin shot to maintain a steady blood sugar level. Do Sri Lankans need to change their traditional diet for healthier living? Written by harold Gunatillake-Health writer “My concern is that when I visit Sri Lanka annually to avoid winter in Australia, my wife is obliged to purchase reluctantly processed food ingredients from the local super-market. Foods from eateries and restaurants are also cooked mainly from processed grains. Incidentally, whole grain foods like brown and red rice, gain less weight than those who fill up on refined grains like white rice. Though added sugars are considered ‘unhealthy’ world-wide, Sri Lankans add at least 4 teaspoons of sugar in their cup of tea or coffee. People indulge in sweetmeat most pleasurably, and obesity among the old, young, school children, and among saree clad ladies seems to be more visible”. ...

POETRY FOR PEACE The predecessor of “song-writing” for me, has been “poetry”. From a very early age, not only did I enjoy reading good poetry, I started writing my own. Proudly, after coming to Australia, my poetry has not only been “accepted” Internationally, it has been “published” in a beautiful hard-back volume, “The Tide of Hours” featuring the best poets & poetry of 2003. As a result, I was “invited” to the U.S.of A. many times but, because of an extremely busy “work schedule” it was impossible for me to make it to America. The following were a trio of “poems” of mine, submitted. One was “Poetry for Peace”(my advice to the World), & the other”Old Ceylon,my Island of dreams”(later composed as a song, with music added)& to begin with, was “The Butterfly”. Please read and hopefully, enjoy :- “THE BUTTERFLY” Like the wings of a butterfly, emerging at last From ...

Chickens cause serious infections in humans so watch out! Dr Hector Perera London When you walk down your high street, you might see different kinds of little shops such as grocery, vegetable and butcher shops. Have you not noticed that in some butcher shops they hang chickens, pieces of beef and lamb just above the counter just like that for hours? Who would say that any kind of meat should be left hanging in the air open to air than in the fridge or freezer? I think sometimes they leave these pieces of meat and chicken for hours without fridge or freezer condition. Now who would say this is hygienic and safe to eat? Raw chicken Raw chicken becomes contaminated with bacteria from the gut, skin and feet of the birds during slaughter and from the water and ice used in processing. It says, chilling the carcass immediately after slaughter ...

Fashion in Focus Yards And Yards Of Beauty – A peek into the how and where of the Sari By Sharmila Jayasinghe Niriella A garment made of an unstitched cloth measuring five to six yards in length and forty-two to forty-nine inches in width has gained much attention as a source of inspiration for fashion all over the world lately. This garment which is known as the sari or saree is no strange attire for those of us who come from “sari wearing” nations. The yards and yards of cloth that we women wrap around ourselves has a rich history dating back to the time when cotton was first cultivated and used in manufacture clothing. Though it is not clearly stated anywhere why the sari is what it is or how it is: a whole lot of cloth draped around the body, the design of the outfit could have had ...
