COMPARISON OF MULTI CULTURAL SOCIETY Vs UNITY IN DIVERSITY. – By Noor Rahim

There are two concepts relating to the above, that are popularized by almost every leading Nation today and this is my opinion of the two. The common denominator in the two is the question of “Unity,” that necessitates a deeper and meaningful look into their intricate meanings.
Many are the Nations that boasts and takes “Pride” in adopting the concept of a “Multicultural Society”. But does it augur well for the “unity” of the Nation that has its’ own current and well established-Culture, which is conducive to their own way and style of living; or will this induction of a new culture result in animosity; or is it ruse by Politicians, just a “Political Gimmick”; to garner votes at or during elections. We have often witnessed; and some of us may have experienced these anomalies. Even Religions are not spared; and some have succumbed to argumentative clashes that go into a “majority rule” (meaning majority ruling the minority) situation that even split Nations, causing rifts//rivalries. Not only between the major Religions but sadly enough within individuals in these Religions. It happens when they remain “tunnel sighted” and remain in their own mindsets. Not wanting to get at least a basic/working knowledge of their own or other Spiritual Guidance.
Experience has it, that in addition the “new and adopted Muti-cultural Society Culture, garners lot of advantages to that of the concept of “Unity in Diversity”. Now, does this augur well for the already existent Citizens of the land. The many advantages are that of having – “the best of two worlds and possess two legitimate passports – one to each country” and in the event of any one of the Nations get into a “warring” situation and you are faced in a calamitous situation; you can always flee to the nearest Diplomatic Mission and seek “Safety & return to the safer land, as the passport dictates”.
The influx of immigrants to another country can be voluntary of their own accord or refugees; by folks seeking “fresh pastures”; religious strife; natural disasters; internal strife & wars, including Political Reasons. So, the Host Nation will be faced with the myriad varieties of “Unity”, they bring in their wake. Hence it is incumbent that the Host Nation adhere to the already established “Rules of Unity” that are well proven. It’s up to the authorities to remind the new immigrants – “You are here of your own accord and are required to live-up to the already setup and accepted standards by the country of adoption; and any future standards as proclaimed and established”.
Experience also shows us that most often, the new immigrants, at least a majority, only “mix & mingle within their own races/ranks & file. Many of the families domiciled within proximity of each other, forming enclaves of the Community they belong to. No doubt, it falls into the category of Unity among themselves – but do we need this brand of unity, in our sovereign land?
On the flip side of this concept, we find a different concept of Unity – “Unity in Diversity”.
Though many Nations do not appear to follow this concept; the fourth populous country in the World with a population of over 280 million spreading across, the South-Asean seas inhabiting 17,000 islands does it extremely successfully. As a matter of fact, the country’s motto is “BHINNEKA TUNGGAL EKA”, which in old Javanese dialect means – “Unity in Diversity”. The country is The Republic of Indonesia.
“Unity in Diversity” is defined as a concept and practice that unites and brings together different cultures, ethnic groups and social backgrounds together; and to co-exist peacefully and in harmony, within the society/races of a Nation. It also leads to the evaluation of the myriad/individual differences that may be the cause of disunity. Thus, the elimination of such differences would undoubtedly lead onto fostering a sense of “TOGETHERNESS”.
It is a fact that we grow up into the confines of the country we are born in – Living in peace and harmony. However, there’s that ugly element of RACIAL PREJUDICE that raises its ugly head among the majority, who will always suppress the minority; thus, creating part of another Nation – Multicultural. I speak from experience, as I left with bitterness and disappointment, after giving of much loyal service and dedication to the land of my birth.
Hopefully this article will give you an awareness into this subject and as the old saying goes – “Pre-warned is Fore-armed”.
