Story of 75 years of independence – By Malsha – eLanka

INTRODUCTION As of 2010, there were 45,159 Sri Lankans living in the US. Substantial immigration began in the 1990s when many fled the violence of the Sri Lankan Civil War. The majority of Sri Lankan-Americans live in the vicinity of either New York City (where there’s a Little Sri Lanka on Staten Island), central New Jersey, or Los Angeles.

Sri Lanka gained its independence from British colonial rule on February 4, 1948. The road to independence was marked by various political, social, and economic developments, with several notable figures, including D.S. Senanayake and S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, playing a significant role in the independence movement.

After gaining independence, Sri Lanka established a democratic government with a parliamentary system of government. The country’s first general election was held in 1947, and since then, Sri Lanka has maintained a vibrant democracy with regular elections and peaceful transitions of power.

However, Sri Lanka’s journey towards independence was not without its challenges. The country faced various issues, including ethnic tensions between the majority Sinhalese and minority Tamils, which led to a 30-year civil war that ended in 2009. The country also struggled with economic issues such as poverty, income inequality, and high levels of public debt.

Despite these challenges, Sri Lanka has made significant progress since gaining independence. The country’s economy has diversified, with significant growth in industries such as tourism, IT, and services. Sri Lanka has also made strides in areas such as education and healthcare, with improvements in access and quality of these services.

Today, Sri Lanka celebrates its independence every year on February 4th, with the day being declared a national holiday. While the country still faces challenges, Sri Lanka’s 75 years of independence represents a significant milestone in the country’s history and serves as a reminder of the progress made and the work that still needs to be done.

The 75 years of independence in Sri Lanka has been a complex and challenging journey, marked by various political, economic, and social developments. While the country has made progress in several areas, it has also faced significant setbacks and challenges.

One of the key achievements of Sri Lanka in the years following independence was the establishment of a democratic government. The country held its first general election in 1947, and since then, Sri Lanka has maintained a vibrant democracy with regular elections and peaceful transitions of power.

However, Sri Lanka’s democracy has also been marred by periods of political instability, violence, and authoritarianism. In particular, the country has struggled with ethnic tensions between the majority Sinhalese and minority Tamils, leading to a 30-year civil war that ended in 2009.

Economically, Sri Lanka has experienced periods of growth and development, but also periods of stagnation and crisis. The country’s economy has diversified in recent years, with significant growth in industries such as tourism, IT, and services. However, Sri Lanka still faces challenges such as high levels of public debt, income inequality, and poverty.

Sri Lanka has also made significant progress in areas such as education and healthcare, with improvements in access and quality of these services. However, the country still faces challenges in providing adequate healthcare and education to all its citizens, especially those in rural and remote areas.

Overall, the history of 75 years of independence in Sri Lanka is a complex and nuanced one, marked by both achievements and challenges. The country has come a long way since gaining independence in 1948, but there is still much work to be done to address the issues facing Sri Lanka and ensure a brighter future for all its citizens.
