It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to a legendary figure in the world of sports, Summa Navarathnam, who left us this morning. His passing marks the end of an era and leaves a void that cannot be easily filled.

For over six decades, Summa Navarathnam stood as a pillar of strength in the world of sports, particularly rugby. He was not only a great coach but a mentor who dedicated his life to nurturing talent and imparting his profound knowledge to countless athletes.

Summa’s accolades in athletics and rugby, including his tenure as the captain of the Ceylon Rugby Team and the title of the Fastest Man in Asia in the 1960s, showcased his exceptional prowess as an athlete. His contributions to these sports were invaluable, and his legacy will forever shine brightly in the annals of sports history.

Summa Navarathnam was more than a coach or an athlete; he was a beloved figure, cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kind and approachable nature made him a mentor to aspiring athletes, who sought his guidance and looked up to him with deep respect.

What truly set Summa apart was his commitment to instilling values in young athletes. He promoted the idea that sports should be enjoyed, a source of camaraderie and fun rather than merely a pursuit of trophies and fierce competition. His belief was firmly rooted in the spirit of sportsmanship and the joy of playing.

Summa’s dedication and devotion to rugby football and athletics in Sri Lanka were rightfully recognized when he was awarded the “Kreeda Bushana” lifetime Presidential Sports Award. This was a testament to his tireless service and the indelible impact he had on the sports landscape of the country.

Today, as we bid farewell to Summa Navarathnam, we mourn the loss of a great sportsman, mentor, and friend. Royal College and Sri Lanka have lost a legendary figure, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of athletes who will carry his teachings of sportsmanship and the love of the game forward.

Goodbye, Sir. Your memory will forever be etched in our hearts, and your influence will continue to guide us in the world of sports and beyond.
