International Women’s Day falls on March 8 – Embracing Women’s Strength: A Path to Equality and Empowerment – By eLanka

International Women’s Day - eLanka (2)

March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a global celebration of women’s achievements, resilience, and ongoing struggle for gender equality. From the bustling streets of cities to the quiet corners of rural towns, women everywhere share their stories of strength and perseverance amidst adversity.

Despite facing additional challenges and vulnerabilities simply by being born as women, they have been stepping up in politics, business, economics, and administration, crafting tales of strength and victory over the years.

A notable example is Sirima Bandaranaike, the first female Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, who defied odds and demonstrated remarkable leadership amidst adversity.

Contrary to stereotypes, women in the workforce exhibit dedication, talent, and proactive efforts to expand their knowledge, often surpassing their male counterparts in certain situations.

Women’s sensitivity and empathy are not weaknesses but blessings that make them compassionate and effective leaders. Their ability to navigate complex negotiations with strength and grace often leads to favorable outcomes in diplomatic missions.

However, despite progress, the Global Gender Gap Report 2023 highlights the sobering reality that closing the gender gap will take over a century, with significant challenges remaining in economic participation and political empowerment.

In Sri Lanka, although robust labor laws and policy initiatives exist, there remains a significant disparity between female educational attainment and representation in the labor market, exacerbated by societal norms and discriminatory attitudes.

Legal barriers and inadequate social infrastructure further discourage women from participating in the workforce, while traditional views and skill mismatches aggravate the issue.

Investing in women is crucial for accelerating progress and addressing issues such as poverty, climate change vulnerability, and gender-based discrimination, as emphasized by the United Nations.

Recognizing women’s potential and empowering them through education, healthcare, safe public spaces, media representation, and community engagement is essential for creating a more inclusive and equitable society.

While women have made significant strides, there is still much to be done. True strength lies in embracing sensitivity, emotionality, and rationality, championing one another’s success, and working towards a happier tomorrow for all.
