The Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya, located in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the administrative capital of Sri Lanka, is one of the most historically and spiritually significant Buddhist temples in the country. It stands as a reminder of the grandeur of the Kingdom of Kotte, which thrived during the 14th to 16th centuries.

Historical Background

The temple is believed to have been established during the reign of King Parakramabahu VI (1412–1467), the last great monarch of the Kotte Kingdom. Under his rule, Kotte became a powerful cultural, religious, and political center. The king patronized Buddhism and constructed this temple as a royal place of worship.

The Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya is not only a spiritual site but also a guardian of history. It is said that the temple served as the spiritual heart of the kingdom, where monks and scholars engaged in religious debates and teachings.

Religious Importance

As a Rajamaha Viharaya (Royal Temple), it holds a special place in the Buddhist tradition of Sri Lanka. Devotees believe the temple was a center for the preservation of Theravāda Buddhism during times of foreign invasions and cultural change. Today, it continues to serve as a place of worship, meditation, and learning for Buddhists across the country.

Architectural Features

The temple showcases traditional Sri Lankan architecture combined with influences from the Kotte era.

  • The Stupa (Dagoba), symbolic of the Buddha’s presence, is a key feature of the temple.

  • Beautifully designed image houses preserve Buddha statues that inspire devotion.

  • The temple grounds also contain ancient ruins and stone works, linking the present with the kingdom’s glorious past.

Modern Role

Today, Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya is not only a sacred site but also a landmark visited by pilgrims and tourists alike. It plays a central role in religious festivals, such as Vesak and Poson, where devotees gather to engage in prayer, almsgiving, and cultural activities.

Additionally, being located in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, near the Parliament, the temple symbolizes the link between Sri Lanka’s historical monarchy and its modern governance.

The Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya remains a living monument of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage. It embodies the spiritual devotion of the Kotte Kingdom while continuing to serve as a beacon of Buddhist culture in the nation’s capital. For both devotees and visitors, the temple offers a journey into history, faith, and serenity.
