SUNDAY CHOICE – As for me and my house – by Charles Schokman

“Christ is the Head of this House, the Unseen guest at every meal, the Silent listener to every Conversation.”

“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”-Joshua 24:15

“The above two passages to most of us are popular. It’s printed on plaques, found on old reclaimed pallet wood, printed on the front of Bibles, and even hand-painted on walls of homes. It adorns Christian homes in many aspects because it is a statement of faith, an affirmation of a family’s commitment and covenant to serve the Lord.

My dad in his ministry would often quote—“It is the duty of every parent to bring up their children in the knowledge and love of God” This showed the importance of placing God first in our lives.

When a Christian father posts a wall hanging saying “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” in his home, he is proclaiming very much the same thing that Joshua did, although he is probably thinking more of his immediate family who live “under his roof.” Christian parents have a responsibility to make sure that what goes on in the home is honouring to God and to exclude activities that are not. Christian parents would do well to remember, however, that they can only control, at most, the external actions and activities that take place in the home, and with much less authority than would have been allowed to Joshua as an ancient patriarch. They are like Joshua in that they are powerless to control what their children feel, believe, and desire. That will require loving communication of their faith to their children and, ultimately, a work of the Spirit of God to change their hearts.

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” is a promise to do the best we can to make sure that everything that takes place inside the home honours God. It is also a prayer that the children raised there will follow in the faith of their parents.”

Pray this clip will help you make your home a dwelling place to serve the Lord.
