Odayar introduced rugby to Thalathuoya Central-by Hafiz Marikar Ikram Odayar It was Ikram Odayar a top class boxer and ruggerite of Trinity College, who introduced rugby to Thalathuoya Central. He was a versatile all-rounder who was a top player and a coach. He coached Trinity College and gave up coaching in 2001 when the team’s performance was at its peak. Ikram was the youngest Trinitian to win the Trinity Lion in 1981, at the age of 14, for Boxing. He won the rugby Lion in 1986. He played for Trinity in 1984 and 1985 under D. Sourjah’s side was made up of players like A. Ratwatte, S. Mediwake, A. Yatawara, J. Kuruwita, PS Dedigama, TB Madugalle, SB Pilapitiyta, H. Jones, R . Vancuylenberg, G. Sanmugam, H. Ranasinghe, RV  Mottram, KA Gunawardena and W. Thurairatnam. His sons Rohan and Lalin also played for Trinity. Rohan was the captain of the Trinity team in 1975. Gamini was one of the finest forwards the country has seen on the rugby field during his playing days and had the unique achievement of being a member of a Clifford Cup wining team on his debut in club rugby, as the captain and later as coach of the club. Known in the rugby circle as Gamma, he was an outstanding flank forward and had the rare distinction of refereeing a match between the French University and London RF in 1979, the first time two Europeans teams played in Sri Lanka.   ...

He started his education at Carey College and later crossed over to Trinity College, where he excelled in both rugby and studies. His ambition was to take up medicine after his school career, but had to end up only with rugby. Speaking of the present day rugby Chang said that “the game has improved very much in recent times”.
