On October 12, 2024, the Sri Lankan community in Brisbane celebrated a momentous occasion with the unveiling of a replica of the historic Avukana Buddha Statue at the Sri Lankarama Temple. This significant event drew a large gathering of religious leaders and devoted attendees, highlighting the statue’s cultural and spiritual importance .
The Avukana Buddha Statue is renowned worldwide for its exquisite craftsmanship and graceful form, representing a profound symbol of Buddhist devotion. The unveiling of this replica offers the local Buddhist community a chance to reflect on the sublime qualities of the Lord Buddha and accrue merit through their reverence .
The project was initiated by the Most Venerable Wattegama Dhammawasa Thero, the Chief Incumbent of the Sri Lanka Buddhist Monastery (SLBM). A dedicated group of engineers in Brisbane volunteered their time over three years, working diligently on weekends to bring this vision to life. Standing six meters tall, the statue is a standalone structure, supported by a deep foundation and reinforced with concrete to ensure its strength and durability. The meticulous finishing touches demonstrate the skill and commitment of the engineers and technicians involved in the project.
Special recognition goes to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Abeydeera, whose financial contributions were instrumental in the project’s success. Furthermore, unwavering presence and encouragement at the worksite every Saturday helped motivate the volunteers.
Following the unveiling, Venerable Nayaka Thero and the Maha Sanga conducted special religious ceremonies over the course of seven days. Each day, more than 300 devotees gathered to offer flowers and recite sacred stanzas, creating a vibrant atmosphere of reverence and joy.
This event not only commemorates a significant cultural artefact but also strengthens the bonds within the Sri Lankan Buddhist community in Brisbane.
