What are the Differences Between Green and Brown Environments?” – By Sunil Wimalawansa

Brown environment:
Refers to man-made or human-altered environments —typically urban or industrial areas—where natural landscapes have been replaced or modified by infrastructure such as buildings, roads, factories, and other developments.
The term “brown” contrasts with “green environment,” which denotes natural or undeveloped ecosystems. Improperly designed Brown environments can contribute to issues such as pollution, heat islands, waste accumulation/infestations, and limited vegetation (less surface to absorb water).
“Preservations” (in environmental context):
This refers to the protection and maintenance of natural environments in their existing state, preventing alteration, (over)exploitation, or degradation by human activity.
Preservation efforts focus on safeguarding ecosystems, species, and natural resources through legal, policy, and community actions—such as establishing wildlife reserves, restricting industrial activity, and promoting sustainable practices. This does not mean over-preservation.
