On Saturday, 17 October 2026, the Geoffrey Bawa Trust held the second Lunuganga Community Day at the celebrated garden estate in Bentota, opening its grounds to the local community free of charge. Visitors were invited to explore the landscape at their own pace, in a rare change from the guided tours through which Lunuganga is normally accessible.

The open day offered more than a visit to a beautiful garden. It brought neighbours into a place closely associated with Sri Lanka’s architectural and cultural history, and invited them to encounter its pathways, water features, planting and sculpture without following a set tour route. The event’s emphasis on access, learning and family activities also reflected a wider relationship between a heritage site and the community around it.

A rare chance to explore at one’s own pace

Lunuganga Community Day ran from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, with entry at the beginning of each hour and the last entrance at 4.00 pm. Admission was free. Garden tours were closed for the day in favour of self-guided walks, allowing visitors to move through the grounds independently.

QR codes placed around the garden provided information about its design and history, as well as current restoration projects. Activities for children and young people included craft activities and a scavenger hunt, extending the day’s appeal beyond visitors already familiar with Geoffrey Bawa’s work.

The practical arrangements were important for anyone planning to attend. The estate’s narrow approach roads and limited parking meant that visitors were encouraged to hire a tuk tuk or car from Bentota or Dedduwa Junction; the property was available for pick-up and drop-off, rather than general parking. The café and hotel were closed during the event, while local vendors offered refreshments for purchase.

There are no post-event visitor figures in the accessible reports, so the size of the 2026 turnout cannot be stated. The first Community Day, held in 2023 as part of the Geoffrey Bawa Trust’s To Lunuganga programme, drew more than 5,000 people from the local area. That earlier response demonstrated a strong appetite for the community to experience this landmark directly, while the latest gathering extended the initiative for a second edition.

From plantation to living landscape

Geoffrey Bawa purchased Lunuganga in 1948, shortly before his thirtieth birthday and in the year Sri Lanka gained independence. The property had originally been a rubber and cinnamon plantation. Under Bawa’s care, it was transformed from an estate associated with extractive plantation practices into a diverse garden, combining native and exotic flora.

The garden was developed over many years as an evolving design project. Its character rests not on a single formal arrangement, but on the interplay of plants, terrain, water, pathways and carefully positioned works of art and sculpture. Evidence of human habitation appears among the vegetation, while planned routes and waterways draw visitors through a landscape that feels discovered as much as designed.

That careful balance between the natural and the designed helps explain why Lunuganga remains so compelling. The garden is not simply a decorative setting around a historic residence: it is a significant part of Bawa’s creative work, shaped by sustained observation and continued adaptation. A self-guided visit gives people time to notice these relationships at their own pace, while interpretive QR codes help provide context along the way.

Stewardship, restoration and community connection

Following Bawa’s death in 2003, management of Lunuganga passed to the Geoffrey Bawa and Lunuganga Trusts. The Trusts oversaw the restoration of buildings and the revegetation of the garden as the property transitioned from a private residence to a public site. Lunuganga is now recognised as a place of national and historic importance.

Maintaining such a property requires more than preserving its appearance. The garden is living and changing, and its care involves balancing conservation and restoration with the need to adapt over time. The knowledge of Lunuganga’s gardeners and staff is instrumental to this work: their experience of the plants, grounds and seasonal conditions supports the practical stewardship of a complex landscape.

Community access is also part of that stewardship. An open day can introduce local visitors to the site’s history, but it can also help strengthen the connection between the estate and its neighbours. The first event’s substantial local turnout underlined the potential for heritage places to serve as shared cultural resources, rather than remaining known only to specialist audiences or visitors on formal tours.

The 2026 event placed that relationship at its centre. Free entry, self-guided exploration and activities for younger visitors made the day welcoming to a broad range of people. While the available sources do not provide a post-event attendance total or a detailed account of the day’s turnout, the Trust’s decision to hold a second edition indicates the continuing value of this community-facing programme.

A wider interest in Bawa’s legacy

Interest in Geoffrey Bawa’s work extends well beyond Sri Lanka. His architecture and approach to landscape are currently receiving international attention through the touring exhibition Geoffrey Bawa: Architecture for the Senses, on view at the Vitra Design Museum in Germany from 26 September 2026 to 28 February 2027. Further details are available from the Vitra Design Museum.

eLanka has previously covered Bawa’s broader architectural legacy and the German exhibition; this article focuses specifically on the Community Day and its invitation to local visitors. For readers who follow his work from Australia and elsewhere, Lunuganga offers a direct connection to the landscape that informed one of Sri Lanka’s most influential architects. Its community open day is a reminder that heritage can be encountered not only through books and exhibitions, but also by walking through a place and seeing how its details fit together.

The event has now been held, but Lunuganga remains a destination for visitors interested in Bawa’s legacy. As ordinary access is generally through guided tours, prospective visitors should consult the Geoffrey Bawa Trust’s tour information before travelling, and check current arrangements in advance. The 2026 Community Day offered a distinct experience: a beloved Sri Lankan garden opening its gates to its neighbours, with space for families and individuals to explore at their own pace.
