For the next 20 years, she worked tirelessly in private hospitals across the country, including Nawaloka, Asiri, Central, Delmon in Colombo, and Philips in Kalutara, near our home in Matugama. Her final assignment was at Philips Hospital, where she trained young nurses. Despite her reluctance, she retired at the age of 80. Sadly, she passed away at the age of 83. Darawala Club, Dickoya (2013) Source:Sri Lankan Planters (SLP) Official FB page The Darrawella Club was founded in 1868 and is situated about two kilometres from the town of Dickoya. As are most parts of the island’s hill country, its location, while not quite as spectacular as that of the Radella Club, nonetheless presents a pretty picture. Situated in a valley, the cricket and rugby field is looked down upon by the tea-field speckled hills of the impressive Wanarajah Estate. Similarly impressive, on the opposite face, the entrance to the clubhouse is embraced by the tea fields of Darrawella Estate. [ Photo: Sri Lanka Guardian] Source:Slguardian In commemoration of Ranaviru month, a time dedicated to honouring the sacrifices made by military and police personnel for the country, we turn our attention to a remarkable story of resilience and compassion. Today, we shine a light on “Anchorage,” a permanent home for two critically wounded sailors located at Walisara, Sri Lanka. This facility serves as a sanctuary for naval personnel who have sustained severe disabilities in the line of duty. Anchorage, an exquisite eco-friendly building constructed by the Navy Civil Engineers, stands proudly adjacent to the Aqua Golf Driving Range, providing a scenic view of the lake. It was made possible through generous funding by the SLN Seva Wanitha Unit and was officially inaugurated by the then Navy Commander, Admiral Piyal De ...

Safety; Accidents; & You – By Noor Rahim As intellectual human beings, please pause awhile, and think back to the last time you gave thought to the simple but most important facet of life – SAFETY. Yet, we have the habit of taking things for granted – Don’t we? The word” Safety” has many meanings in the dictionary. But in the context of human beings it would simply mean “SELF SURVIVAL”. In other words it would mean the “will” of an individual to lead a “normal” and “accident free” life. Self -survival is based on pure “common sense”; and dominates our lives from the day we are born to the day we depart this materialistic world. The non-conformity or adherence to safety requirements will invariable lead to an accident be it minor or serious in nature. It is a known factor that accidents do not just occur – it is ...

ETERNAL SPLENDOUR IN STONE – THE STORY OF THE LESHAN BUDDHA – by Bernard VanCuylenburg. PROLOGUE. This story is about a Monk, a Buddha, and two rivers, which had its genesis over 1500 years ago in Leshan China, on a cliff face overlooking the confluence of the Dadu and Min rivers. Before I get to the crux of this article, some context by reference to the two statues of the Buddha in the Bamiyan valley in Afghanistan is timely. The destruction of the Bamiyan Buddha statues in 2001 signalled the loss of a priceless legacy to humanity, and dealt a fatal blow to the cultural sensitivities of the world. One statue stood 180 ft tall, and the other was 124 ft. Both statues over 2000 years old stood in an area which was a holy site for Buddhists, on the ancient trading route between China and Europe known as The Silk ...
