Senior Sri Lankan journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama has been provided with additional Police security, following increased threats to his life and amidst the deaths of his four interviewees.

Acting IGP confirmed that Chamuditha Samarawickrama had been provided with Police Security Upon being inquired, senior journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama also confirmed to Newswire that he has been provided with four MSD officials.Four persons interviewed by Chamuditha Samarawickrama had been killed under mysterious circumstances in the recent past.

Journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama was summoned to the Colombo Criminal Investigation Division for the second time this morning to be questioned about the statement made by Asela Nuwan Rajapaksa to the “Truth with Chamuditha YouTube channel” journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama.

The Colombo Criminal Investigation Division questioned him for a long time and recorded his statement before releasing him.

It is also reported that Chamuditha Samarawickrama was questioned for nearly 5 hours and recorded his statement  in January on this matter.

Journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema’s house attacked by thugs

An unidentified group has attacked the house of journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema on the morning. of 14th February 2022

Four persons who had arrived at the Cambridge Court housing complex in Piliyandala where he was staying in a white van had first forcibly opened the main entrance gate of the housing scheme.It is said that the security forces who were there later aimed a pistol at the employee’s head and threatened him and came to the journalist’s house.

The unidentified persons who had entered the housing complex had hurled stones at the house of Chamuditha had caused severe damage to his house.

Meanwhile, the Journalists’ Association of Sri Lanka has condemned the attack on journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema.

The union says that if any group tries to silence journalists by carrying out thug attacks, the relevant  authorities should take immediate action against it as well as prevent such heinous media repression.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated that three police teams have launched investigations into the incident, but to date the culprits were not found.

The brutal attack on journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema’s  two storeyed dwelling was condemned by the Federation of media Employees Trade Union .

The Federation of Media Employees Trade Unions, in conjunction with the International Federation of Journalists, strongly condemns the barbaric, cowardly attack on the house of journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema. The International Federation of Journalists is the most powerful media organization with a membership of over 600,000 journalists, comprising 167 media organizations in 146 countries.

Chamuditha Samarawickrema has been a prominent journalist in the Sri Lankan media for a long time and has been a vocal critic of the actions of politicians and anti-social elements. At the time of the attack, he was a journalist who was playing the vital role of a powerful journalist in the “Paththare” and “Salakuna” programs of the Hiru TV channel.

We urge the government to expedite such investigations and crackdown on thugs. Except by such action, suspicion of the people about state or political interference for these types of incidents cannot be ruled out.
