Meet Srimerican of the Year Award Winner Aruni Boteju

The Sri Lanka Foundation is awarding Aruni Boteju for her work in creating the Ceylon International Film Festival, a film festival that shares Sri Lankan culture with the world. Her success in charitable causes has made an organizational and monetary impact in helping the U.S. and Sri Lanka. Aruni Boteju was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and she is the oldest of three daughters of Manel and Ariyadasa Horanage. She attended Buddhist Ladies Collage, Colombo 7, which laid the foundation for her academic pursuits. In her teenage years, her family relocated to Santa Barbara, California. She continued her studies at Santa Barbara City College and subsequently achieved a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Phoenix. Aruni is the Founder and CEO of the Ceylon International Film Festival (CEYIFF). The CEYIFF is a non-profit arts and educational organization founded in 2021. It is the first Sri Lankan film festival organized outside of Sri Lanka.

In a highly competitive profession, Dr. Egodage is making a name for herself. Dr. Egodage is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, Camden, NJ. Previously, she was an attending surgeon in Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care at Cooper University Hospital in Chicago, IL.

Dilip and Wathsala celebrated their silver wedding anniversary and Wathsala’s 50th Birthday recently.

Wathsala also launched her inaugural children’s book based on a true happening in her Montessori class titled “What Happened to the Butterfly”. The occasion was celebrated before a large gathering of guests at a banquet held recently at the Pacific Palms Resort. It was a grand occasion with performances of Bollywood and Spanish Dancing, Piano Recitals ending with the Sri Lankan Baila.

The Sri Lanka Postal Department is offering citizens the chance to design postal stamps featuring their own photographs or events, with a creation cost of Rs.2000, said Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara.

Addressing an event organized in Colombo to unveil a stamp for Hatton National Bank (HNB), he announced that individuals can now acquire a sheet of stamps with 20 stamps tailored for special occasions like weddings, gatherings, and parties or their own photographs.

“Families can enhance the uniqueness of their wedding cards by using these stamps, featuring photos of the couple. These stamps can also serve as postal stamps,” he mentioned.

Obituaries – Sad News

Ronnie de Mel Ronnie de Mel (98) who was instrumental in introducing the open economy in Sri Lanka in 1978 passed away on February 27, 2024 in Colombo. He introduced the open economy in Sri Lanka as the Finance Minister under the guidance of late President President J. R. Jayawardene’s cabinet in 1977.   Ronnie de Mel was the longest serving finance minister in the country and one who has presented the most number of budgets from 1977 to 1987.  His funeral was held at the Ruhunu University grounds on February 29th, 2024.

Recipes From Roma's Kitchen

OVEN BRAISED CORNED BEEF IN BEER

Ingredients

  • 4lbs. Brisket
  • 1 large Onion (Cut in half and sliced)
  • 1 teaspoon Black Peppercorns
  • 1/2 teaspoon Allspice
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 2 cups light (Golden Beer)
  • 4 cups Broth

METHOD

1.Gather ingredients together

2.Rinse the Corned Beef under cold running water to remove

  all the salt from the surface

3. Put 1/2 the sliced onions at the bottom of a large Dutch Oven.

4.Bring Beer and Broth to a boil

5.Add the rest of the ingredients to the pot and cook this for 

 4-5 hours

6.When the meat is tender and the liquid bubbling,remove the meet onto a platter and slice it. The vegetables can be placed on a side of the meat

7.Pour some of the gravy over the meat and the rest on the 

  side in a sauce bow

RED CABBAGE SALAD

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 2 teaspoons celery seeds
  • Salt and ground Black Pepper
  • 1/2 Head Red Cabbage cut into 1 1/2 inch chunks
  • 2 small carrots grated
  • 1 small Red Onion chopped
  • 1 cup Golden Raisins

METHOD

Toss all of the above in a salad bowl and serve as a Side Dish by the sliced Corned Beef. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of you who celebrate it. Those of you who do not, should still make this very Irish Dish. I hope you enjoy it.

*TIP

This can be made in your Crock Pot following the  same directions on medium heat. When you know your meat is tender and the broth still bubbling  you can turn the heat off, place the meat to rest for a few minutes on your slicing board and follow the directions. Please email me with any questions you may have or any requests.
