Ursula Aruma Donates to Sri Lankan Temple

On 16th February 2024, Ursula Aruma from Melbourne, Australia visited her homeland. She celebrated her 83rd birthday in Sri Lanka. She visited the Sri Sathya Sai School in Manipay, the Thiru Korneshawaram Kovil in Trincomalee, the hot wells in Trinco, the Dutch Burgher Union in Colombo, and the Walawe Sri Dewarakkitharama Rajamaha Viharaya, Damwelodaya, Kotaweheramankada, Tanamalwila. Ursula is seen here donating from David Weinman and herself to the Venerable at the Temple, ensuring the ongoing maintenance of the temple and its benefits to the villagers of Damwelodaya, Kotaweheramankada. Same time as Ursula was in Sri Lanka, another burgher couple Phil and Janet Meynert were visiting. Phil is the son of Travice Meynert, long serving ranger in charge of Yala National Park in the 1930s, 40s.

Sri Lanka Association (SLAASC) Fundraiser

 Sri Lanka Schools Golf Tournament 2024 organized by the Old Joes Association of California

The 2024 Schools Golf Tournament was held on the 14th  April at the Los Robles Golf Course, Thousand Oaks, Ca. Over 65 golfers participated with much enthusiasm and great camraderie. Old Joe Lalith Perera was the chief architect of the Golf Tournament while OJAC President Dino Silva and the committee/wives put the finishing touches to a great event. The Old Joes Association of California (OJAC) who did a fantastic job with dinner and music which was enjoyed by over 100 guests who attended the social. Gloaming Dinner Dance Grand Concert Held in Switzerland

Gloaming Dinner Dance, a grand concert organized by Sri Lankans living in Switzerland on March 2, was a great success. Organizers and guest singers like J.A Milton Perera’s son Piyushan Perera and Chitral Somapala, and popular band Waves Milano participated in this event. In 2021, the Waves band started with 6 talented Sri Lankan musicians living in Milan, Italy, initiated by Kemantha Vaduge, an expert bass guitar player in Italy, and has now created a very high demand among the Sri Lankans living in Italy.

Gamini Rodrigo of Melbourne, Australia, passed away recently. Gamini was an “Old Josephian.”

Maria Chandrani Ratnayake (83) Wife of Ernest Joseph Ratnayake,​ passed away on May 22nd,​ 2024. Mother to Laki,​ Surani,​ Niranjen and Shanali. Grandmother to Savannah,​ Tanja,​ Aaron,​ Jonathon,​ Shaniya,​ Diren and Avani. Sister of the late William De Alwis,​ Manel Siriwardana,​ Sister Louisa of Holy Family and Anthony De Alwis. The body will be kept at No. 214,​ Kotagedera Road,​ Madapatha,​ Piliyandala. A service will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church,​ Kotagedera Road,​ Dompe at 12:30 p.m. on Friday May 24th,​ followed by the cremation at Gallkissa Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

 

Reverend John Blaze (99) passed away in Australia. Family and Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service to Celebrate the life of John Blazé. This will be held on Friday 31st of May 2024 at Berwick Church of Christ, 432-446 Centre Rd, Berwick, commencing at 11.00am. This will be followed by a burial service at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, 600 Princes Hwy, Springvale in the Baptist Compartment A Section at 2.45pm. Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen

Duck with Artichoke

Ingredients

  • 4 confit Duck legs (about 300g/10 1/2oz each)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed 
  • 4 tablespoons canned 
  •   tomato pulp or chunky
  •   passatta/strained tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon 
  • sweet paprika
  • 1.25litres/generous 5 cups
  •   hot chicken stock*
  • 400g/14oz.can artichoke hearts
  • drained and halved
  • 4 tablespoons freshly
  •  chopped parsley
  • 350g/scant 2 cups bomba,
  • Calasparra or aborio rice
  • salt

METHOD

Wipe away and discard the duck fat from the legs.

Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole and gently fry and garlic for 10 minutes, until softened. Stir in the tomato pulp and paprika and cook for 5 minutes, until dry. Pour in the stock.

Stir in the artichoke hearts and rice, and arrange the duck legs in the pan pressing down into the rice. Return  to a gentle simmer and cook for about  twenty minutes until the rice is al dente and the liquid almost absorbed.

Stir in the parsley and serve. *TIP: make chicken stock with the leftover chicken carcas  from a roast chicken. Simply roughly drop or separate the  bones and cavity and place in a saucepan with some fresh  chopped fresh vegetables and 2 litres of cold water.

Simmer for 45 minutes until the stock has a good flavour. Strain and reserve the stock.

SERVES 4.
