Kataragama Wasana: The Majestic Tusked Elephant of Sri Lanka-by Kalani-eLanka

The Kataragama Wasana, a revered Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), holds a significant place in Sri Lanka’s cultural and religious heritage. Residing at the sacred Kataragama Devalaya, Wasana is a symbol of strength, grace, and devotion.

Kataragama Wasana was born in the wild in the Anuradhapura forests around 1970. Captured in 1971 at a young age, the elephant was later donated to the Kataragama Devalaya by the late Wimala Kannangara when he was approximately six years old. Initially named Raja, he was later renamed Wasana, a name that resonates with blessings and prosperity.

Wasana is a towering figure, standing at an impressive height of 305 cm, making him the tallest tamed elephant in Sri Lanka. His majestic tusks, measuring over two and a half feet, add to his grandeur, earning him admiration from devotees and tourists alike.

Kataragama Wasana plays a vital role in Sri Lanka’s religious and cultural traditions. He is entrusted with carrying the sacred Relics casket during major processions, including the famed Kandy Esala Perahera. His disciplined demeanor and regal appearance make him a highlight of these spiritual events, drawing large crowds eager to witness his presence.

Under the watchful care of his mahout, Ajith Asoka, Wasana leads a well-tended life at the Kataragama Devalaya. His daily routines, which include bathing and feeding, are carefully managed to ensure his well-being.

The Kataragama Devalaya, one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka, is enriched by Wasana’s presence. His participation in rituals and festivals enhances the spiritual ambiance of the temple, attracting countless devotees who view him as a living embodiment of blessings.

Wasana’s fame extends beyond Sri Lanka, with his life documented on various social media platforms and video channels. Dedicated Facebook pages and YouTube playlists showcase his activities, offering insights into his life and his integral role in preserving Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.

Kataragama Wasana is not just an elephant; he is a cultural icon and a spiritual symbol. His majestic stature, coupled with his role in sacred traditions, makes him a cherished part of Sri Lanka’s rich heritage.
