Kurakkan Thalapa is a wholesome and nutritious dish made from finger millet flour, commonly known as kurakkan in Sri Lanka. This thick, porridge-like dish has been a staple in rural areas for generations, offering a filling and healthy meal packed with essential nutrients. Here’s a closer look at how to prepare this humble yet delicious traditional food.

Ingredients:

  • Kurakkan flour (finger millet flour)
  • Grated coconut
  • Salt
  • Water

Method:

  1. Prepare the mixture: In a large bowl, mix kurakkan flour with a pinch of salt and enough water to form a smooth, thick batter. Add grated coconut for extra flavor and texture.
  2. Cook the thalapa: Heat a pot with a small amount of water and add the kurakkan mixture. Stir continuously over medium heat to prevent lumps from forming. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens into a firm, pudding-like consistency.
  3. Serving: Kurakkan Thalapa is typically served warm. It can be enjoyed as a light meal or snack. For a savory version, it is sometimes served with lunu miris—a spicy onion and chili paste.
Can try this for breakfast, lunch or even dinner.

Nutritional Benefits:

Kurakkan, or finger millet, is a powerhouse of nutrition. It is high in fiber, calcium, iron, and essential amino acids, making it ideal for those looking to sustain energy, improve digestion, and regulate blood sugar. Kurakkan Thalapa is a prime example of how traditional Sri Lankan cuisine combines delicious taste with nutritious benefits.

This simple, rustic dish not only nourishes the body but also carries the flavors and heritage of Sri Lanka’s culinary traditions.
